Summary: A classical house of straw!
Review: When I was assigned to read this book in seminary I dreaded reading it because I thought it would destroy my Faith. But,quite the contrary it showed me how the secularlist sees Christianity and the approach that a non-believer takes with discrediting the Christian Faith and God. It made my Faith stronger than ever. This book is a valuable resource to get a good survey of the subject matter, but it fails to be convincing in it's anti-God argument. JER Memphis, TN

Summary: Shows how unlogical all dogmas are
Review: Mister Russell, a truly keen mind manages to disprove all classical "proofs of God." One of them is the "proof of the first cause". However: it was n o t Mr. Russell, who made up this proof, but it has been used by God believers ever since the middle-ages in order to prove God's existence. Russell only diproves it by saying: If there m u s t be a cause to everything, this also would have to include God. If something can exist without a cause before it, this might just as well be the world. (By the way: This conclusion has already been brought up by the the Jains, a sect from India which first evolved about 600 B.C.)
Futhermore, a differentiation between "effect" and "existence" is rather arbitrary and can not really be used as an argument against Russell's ideas. By the way, Mr.Russell used to call himself an agnostic rather than an atheist.

Review: "A relentless pursuit of God, a relentless pursuit of the people He loves" It's a relationship, not a religion. YAKADOO!

Summary: The most thought provoking book written against Christianity
Review: Christianity is a farce. And Mr. Russell proves it without a doubt. I left Christianity 11 years ago. It was the best decision I have ever made. My life finally has hope and meaning. I actually want to get up in the morning, since I threw Christianity away. Thanks to all people like Mr. Bertrand Russell, that helped me get through that trying time, when one first leaves a very strong delusion. This book is for all those who need to "re-load" their defense against the fanatical Christian zealot. And its for those who are trying to leave the "Cult" of Christianity, and need a little help. Please read this book, it is worth everything.

Summary: this book will change your life
Review: This book is excellent, because it examines parts of our culture that we are not "supposed" to examine. Read this, then read Carl Sagan's "The Demon-Haunted World", and you will be on the road to truth instead of fantasy.

Summary: Objective reading requires intelligence
Review: I definitely agree that no reviewer of this book should let any biasness towards christianity taint the review. Just throwing out a few bible quotes doesn't substitute for intelligent thoughts on why this book is good or bad. If any other reviewers of this book have something against it, explain it in a logical manner. If you want a lesson on explaining things in a logical manner, just re-read (or read) Russel's book.

Summary: I apologize and you're right...
Review: Bystander#1, you're right, it should be 'per se', not 'per say'. Please excuse the error. I was also under the misconception that Mr. Russell was still living. Please excuse my presumption. I see that my previous statements have since provoked many reviewers. If I've offended anyone, I apologize. However, I will not renounce what I've already stated. I will leave you with this, "When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth...Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord...And cast him out of the city, and stoned him...And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep." Acts 7:54ff.

Summary: In case you get into a street brawl with a Christian...
Review: Christianity has evolved since the time Russell wrote this book, so in my opinion one should evaluate this book from a more or less historical point of view. While some of the points Russell raise about Christianity in the book still apply, there are probably more fundamental questions one can ask about the validity of Christianity. I find this book entertaining in the sense that it's as if Mr. Russell got into a street brawl with a Christian and in order to win over support from the bystanders he chooses to be entertaining rather than formal. If you enjoy a well-versed street brawl, then this is the book for you. I also want to say I'm offended by some of the previous reviews. The Christian reviewers below don't seem to understand one should be unbiased when writing a review, which tells you something about their IQ. (By the way, do all Christians use "per say" instead of "per se" ?)

Summary: Is Mr. Russell now a Catholic?
Review: Has Mr. Russell converted to Roman Catholicism? Why would a learned man attach any credence to the logic presented herein? If Mr. Russell is indeed now a professed Roman Catholic, can one abide with that fact and still believe that he could glean valuable insight from this work? Friends, Christians are not humorless backward-thinking throwbacks from the Dark Ages. They are not ignorant of science, law, business, politics, and so on. Some claim this work is not an attack on Christianity per say. They say that Mr. Russell has merely presented a lofty discourse on how we should logically refute the antiquated and unsubstantiated 'nature' of Christianity. I suggest to the reader that this is merely literature that is readily accessible for those individuals who do not wish to obey the very thing they know in their hearts to be the truth.

Go ahead and purchase this book. Read it. Reflect on the logic presented. Then read the following verses from the Bible; 1 Jon. 2:22, 2 Thes 2:11-12, 1 Tim. 4:1-2, Titus 1:10-12, Rev. 20:12, John 12:48, John 3:5, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, Matt. 24:34-44, 2 Peter 2:20. Can you articulately and intelligently refute the evidence contained in the scriptures? Read Acts 7:51-60.

Summary: you don't have to agree to appreciate this work
Review: I personally loved this book, it was very enlightening not only because I came to agree with some of his ideas but I found many of my own beliefs incorperated into it. I think for myself and urge everyone else to do the same, but just keep an open mind while reading...
