Rating: Summary: A truly remarkable book. Review: In Buddhism: Plain and Simple, Steve Hagen has managed to capture the complexity of Buddhist practice without pushing the reader away with jargon, dogma, or judgment. He writes with beautiful simplicity and great empathy about the challenges of living fully when our mind does not necessarily want to cooperate! I have read this book several times and learn something each time. I would say that this book and The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying form a wonderful introduction to Buddhist practice and philosophy.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: This book is probobly the most simple, concise guide to buddhism I have ever read. This author manages to keep it short and sweet, while still making it very easy to understand using simple terms, and simple examples. If you've been reading or studying the subject for some time, or just a beginner, let me assure you, this book is user friendly and a must have for both.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: It was so simple, yet so profound
Rating: Summary: wonderful & easy read Review: i've had many guitar teachers in the 21 yrs i've been a player, and only one who not only plays well but knows how to pass on the info. in my 7 yrs in college, i had only a handful of profs that were like my current guitar instructor. i've found over the yrs that there are only a few people who really know their stuff, the type you ask a question about their profession and they always have an answer, the "right" answer, or can admit if they don't know. these are wonderful people to come across and experience. steve hagen is one of the few. this is the first book i've read on buddhism and i won't be surprised if it's the best i ever read!
Rating: Summary: Plain and Simple? Maybe not Review: This book is one of the most life altering reads of My 55years. My Ego is strong and my soul is steeped in the academic knowledge of Western Culture. Steve Hagan succeeds in explaining the Buddha's transformation to enlightenmemt and his affect upon his contemporary world and the following 2500 years of human existence without preaching and with respect for other philosophical concepts. I can honestly say my life has been made better and happier by the experience of reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Start with this book Review: If you read just one book on Buddhism, read this one. If you plan to read ten, then read this one first.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: The clearest view I've read on Buddhism. A good book to start with
Rating: Summary: Post-modernism???? Review: Cuts through the western crap we've built up and gets to the heart of the way. Read this, meditate and start practicing rightness before we're reduced to arguing if Foucault's view was more lofty than Nietzche's while we're sitting around a 50 gallon drum burning old copies of Peirce...
Rating: Summary: Learned more with each of the seven times I have listened. Review: I have enjoyed each of the many times I have listened to this enlightening tape on Buddhism. It has enabled me to look deeper into what is all around me and in me. It is indeed "plain and simple" and easy to incorporate into my daily life. I plan on listening to this tape many more times.
Rating: Summary: This book has helped me attain awareness. Review: After taking numerous classes and reading literature pertaining to many different philosophies, I found a superb guide to enlightenment in Mr. Hagen's book. The author explains how to achieve awareness through one's own experience. This book, more than any other, has had a profound effect on my consciousness. It has helped me find joyousness and beauty in the world for the first time in years. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone interested in improving their perspective of life.
