Rating: Summary: Great for beginners Review: Ok, i know a lot of people critisize Silver's 'candy floss' view of witchcraft, but i think this book is great as a general starting point. It helps with basic tasks such as creating sacred space and finding your magickal name, and although it isnt always in depth, it serves as a base for further research. It is good for people who arent sure about choosing withcraft as their religion because it explains what it is and what it isnt. Overall, a good addition to any newcomers collection but probably not useful to experienced witches.
Rating: Summary: Insulting Review: After years and years of effort to bring Wicca into a possition where our religion is recognized as a valid spiritual choice, this book insults everyone who has taken part in the birth and growth of our religion. The book starts off with a story which reports to be a rewrite of The Charge of the Goddess by Doreen Valiente. But in this book, everything is missing from the charge except the title. Different words, different meanings, and curious of all it is credited to Doreen Valiente who in her own books says she did not write the Charge of the Goddess (she rewrote what A. Crowley wrote based on Aradia). From there, it gets worse. It is as if the names of the founders of Wicca were thrown in just for acredation, but none of the message is present. If you want an introduction to Wicca, better to read Cunningham, Beth, or Drew and only read this one once you have a firm grasp of what it is that this book pretends to be.
Rating: Summary: McIntyre 4th per. online review Review: Iv'e read this book a million times and refer to it when I need help or I've forgotten something. Silver is a great author adding humor along with stories of her own experiences to her books. I strongly suggest this to readers looking into the wiccan religion or perheps just studying the science of it.
Rating: Summary: much info Review: This is a very good book. It will tell you alot..how to get started..and so on. If you are new to Wicca,,i would suggest this book. It leads you in the right direction..then you can choose how and where you will go with it
Rating: Summary: What's wrong with fluffy bunnies??? Review: I keep hearing mention of SRW and bunnies. I like bunnies. They're cute. I don't quite get the fluff bunnies stuff, so if someone can explain, please do. I dig this book, its cool if you're like me; raised a Catholic (oooh...) and now a Witch. I like all of her books, as a matter of fact. They are interesting and informative. I just don't get some of the reviewers on here. So what if she has a hunting spell? Yeah, the Rede says "Harm none," but if you take that too seriously you may as well call yourself a fluffy bunny. Literally, are you going to starve yourself because eating lettuce kills a plant? C'mon people. I left Catholicsm because I was sick of the hipocrasy I encountered there. Don't you think harsh words go against the Rede? Think before you type. Anyway, this is a good book for beginners, or anyone who wants a fresh look at the Craft. Blessed Be!
Rating: Summary: Enlightenment Review: I have been a Solitary practioner for 25 years. This is the best I have read. It takes away the dark cloud that sometimes surrounds the craft for those who might want to investigate but fear they will do something wrong. It also puts the craft in a light vein which is where it should be. There is nothing to hide. There is no ominous darkness in the craft and she explains in detail exactly that. I find that organized religions are based on fear but ours should not be because there is nothing fearful about it. I think every beginner would do well to read this book. This is witchcraft 101 in its finest form. I wish I had this years ago. I also learned new things from it. One never knows everything and I found this to be most informative, delightful and pleasant. The only negative I found was the cover is a bit silly in my humble opinion. The content is excellent. Thank you for this work. It is one I will personally recommend and treasure.
Rating: Summary: OK, calm down people Review: Alright, I understand why some of you are so upset about SRW, but we really don't need to go around posting up names like Silver Raven-twit on the net. That sort of stuff is not helpful to anyone trying to find out about this book (although "$ilver Ravenwolf" was pretty funny and quite true). I was raised practicing the craft, and I'm still a teen ager, but I would not go around typing up insulting stuff like that. It turns people off, and that is not something Witches, Pagans, etc can afford to do. Listen, if you are someone who wants to begin studying the Craft and is searching around amazon.com for books on the matter, please ignore those coments and this book. Or, rather, don't ignore this book totally, but read it and don't internalize it and think that this is what it is really all about; especially don't try any spells without first looking at some other books first. Witchcraft is NOT something to be played around with! And don't give up hope; here are some books that may help you on your journey: Circle Round by Starhawk, Diane Baker, and Anne Hill (this book does not talk about Witchcraft, but if you are interested in learning about the basic religious beliefs of Pagans, etc, then this is something you'll want to read), and Wicca, A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. If you are not a beginner, then I wouldn't waste your money on this book if you're not really interested in learning anything new; however, there are people who have liked and learned from this book. I thought some parts were funny and witty, and Silver takes a new angle on trying to teach Witchcraft by having her readers record and study different terms and whatnot (however, she does not REALLY explain what all of these terms mean), and I thought that was interesting. Anyway, All the luck and Blessed Be
Rating: Summary: insulting to witches Review: pure junk from the queen of the fluff bunnies, how dare she reduce the craft to basket weaving 101, a self proclaimed grand puba of yet another mass produced llewellyn non-sense book, sliver-raven-twit is an author not a witch, and not helpfull to the real witchcraft community.
Rating: Summary: GIMME A BREAK Review: This book and this author give Wiccans and Pagans a bad name. If you are serious about the Craft, don't buy this book, which makes a serious religious practice seem like a game. This is dime-store stuff and if Llewellyn keeps putting out garbage like this, I will start boycotting them. Every time I see the silly cover of this book, I cringe. How embarrassing! Most Wiccans that I know (especially those in my coven) think "SIlver Ravenwolf" is a joke and an embarassment to all who seriously practice the craft. In short, if you're looking to whet your appetite for Wiccan knowledge, this book is like cotton candy. Buy a book instead that's got real substance!
Rating: Summary: Covers alot but don't buy it if your a beginner!! Review: ok i used to like silver's books on witchcraft but this one is the only book i would write bad comments!!! why? for one thing i must tell all you people out there the truth! i've notice that many kids today are intrested in wicca at around age 12 and under!!!!!!!!!!! yup thats right! there are alot of 3rd graders i heard and know who are intrested in wicca and proboly picked this one out for a beginner's study! this book is not really right because it talks about animal hunting, sex, and one thing for sure i notice in some of silver's books is that she writes it as if you were suppose to know the info and doesn't give anymore info. it's hard to learn from this books of hers since she doesn't put enough info in certain subjects! Like the chakaras! she doesn't explain how to get rid of negative energy when you do healing! this can make lots of people sick! i would reccament Teen Witch for beginner's but not this one! Unless your an adult. i just like it how she writes alot on witchcraft how she makes it seem intresting.
