The teacher, in this case, is Yehuda Berg, whose enthusiasm, optimism, and confidence are infectious. Berg begins with the most basic principles of kabbalah. People are made of desires, he explains, and our deepest desire is fulfillment, which is symbolized by light. Kabbalah teaches that light floods the universe, but nevertheless, many fail to find fulfillment. We become stuck in difficult situations when we fail to perceive the spiritual realities that underlie, surround, and even permeate the physical world. This is difficult stuff to summarize without sounding silly (and there are moments in this book when Berg's confidence overreaches into rah-rah territory). But go along for the ride. The Power of Kabbalah is an entertaining, beautifully designed book of spiritual instruction--a good first step for all who are curious about exploring kabbalah. --Michael Joseph Gross
