Rating: Summary: Excellent astro correspondences orientation for Tarot Review: In addition to the glowing reviews you're already seeing on this particular deck, there's a little bit more to add....and I do so without paying attention to any of the nutty 'warnings' related reviews or 'not for the weak at heart' rubbish.Decks are largely a matter of taste...some will tickle yours, and some will not. Over time, decks which you thought were amazing looking will start to seem trite and juvenile. What I'm not going to worry about here is the taste aspect. That's for you to decide and will depend largely on your influences. What can be said for certain is that there's a lot of interesting symbology on the Crowley-Thoth deck. Unlike my other standard favourite (the Rider-Waite), the symbology and correspondence references are immediately obvious, even to those new to that aspect of the readings. Having one deck of each of the sizes for this set, I'd reccomend the 3 1/4" x 5 1/2" (large/oversized) deck for those meditating on or studying the artwork of the set. It makes the various archetype symbologies far easier to discern...particularly if your eyes are getting old like mine...:) Visually appealing, easy to engage, and as deep as you're willing to go with them, this deck provides a wealth of reading inspiration, and has many great books available for deeper interpretation of the various influential correspondences referenced by it. Definitely a great staple deck for personal or group reading.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful designs and powerful imagery Review: The Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot Deck was obviously carefully crafted with regard for the true meanings behind each card and for the feelings that each image invokes. The deck is strewn with lush imagery and colorful symbolism. My only complaint about the deck(and the reason that it only received four stars) was because they're a bit oversized. It's quite difficult to shuffle with these because of their size.
Rating: Summary: Suggest you find this book too Review: The Crowley deck is fantastic and fascinating, especially as a meditation too. I have one suggestion, for anyone who buys this book: Find a copy of "The Qabalistic Tarot" by Robert Wang
Rating: Summary: A good beginning Review: The material is a lot for a beginner to absorb. The imagery is captivating, and provides a springboard for further investigation. Since acquiring the Thoth Tarot Deck, I have had a lot more reading to do.
Rating: Summary: An excellent tarot deck designed by a master occultist Review: The Rider-Waite deck, one of the most popular Tarot decks, was designed by a member of the Golden Dawn, but watered down to avoid giving away that Order's symbolism. Crowley was another member of the Golden Dawn, and at one time favored to succeed its founder, and when he founded his own magickal order he put his whole heart and arte into designing this deck. No tricks, nothing held back. The Book of Thoth, Crowley's commentary on his deck, is awfully dense for a beginner or for someone just interested in Tarot and not the occult underpinnings. On the other hand, the little cheat sheet booklet that comes with the deck is pretty good, and probably all you need to start doing readings. As for doing readings, treat the deck in the same way you would treat a friend - with respect, casually when appropriate, never carelessly, always with great personality. Owned at least 20 decks before, and always return to this one. M
Rating: Summary: Cool Hobby to Have Review: The Tarot, and especially with this deck is a cool hobby to have. From what I've seen it is one of the most blasphemous things you can do, but who cares; god doesn't exist! Their sayings that the Bible forbids seeing your future, etc., only heightened its appeal to me. I would recommend the Book of Thoth as well as any other books on the Crowley Thoth Tarot to aid you as a tool. The deck comes with a booklet that explains the meaning of the cards but they are just o.k.; that's why I recommend the Book of Thoth as a companion. Those rednecks calling themselves Christians as well as those rednecks allegedly being goths or punks or other alternative subculture are just that- the biggest rednecks. Take your contradiction filled Bible and wipe with it. While at first I struggled with the deck, now I'm an ace at it. I could teach a class on Tarot. The cards drawn that are "lust, death, etc" don't usually need to be looked up if you have the words in your vocabulary. For instance, last time I used the deck the first card I drew was the lust card. It was the past, which was true. I did a reading if I would get my degree or not. The first card I drew was lust, which represented the past, which was true; I lusted after all the big breasted college women I knew.
Rating: Summary: A great tarot deck... if you can find the good ones! Review: There are at least two types of printings of the large format of this deck: In one type the deck look great (basically excactly like the smaller version), in the other type the color quality is terrible, the fronts of all the cards having a sage-green tint. You can tell them apart in several ways: 1) Certain editions (see ISBN: 0880794690) are known good but they're also hard to find. 2) Look at the ends of the box, if you see the words "Printed in Belgium" anywhere on the box, you've probably got a bad one, but I've found good decks in the wrong boxes sometimes, so to be certain... 3) Take the cards of the box, leavinging them still sealed in their internal plastic wrapping and look at the border of the bottom card (or request that your seller do so). Only if the border of the card is a silver/gray (NOT at all green-ish) should you buy it. I personally am offended that the publisher hasn't recalled the ones with poor printing. While I agree with other reviewers that the suit cards have far simpler images on them then you'll find in many decks, they're still far from flat or offering "few clues as to the meaning of the cards". They're quite evocative, and if you're lost, the one-word meaning on the card will point you atleast in the right direction. Many of the comments I've read about the "dark" and "harder to read" qualities of this deck sound to me like they're describing the cards with poor color. Find a well-printed deck, and, whether you know all their symbology or not, these cards will speak to you.
Rating: Summary: A Tarot suitable for Ceremonial Magick Review: These large cards might be difficult for smaller hands to manage, but no matter. This is actually a Book, each page saying in a few select images what might take volumes to elucidate. Best if purchased with the accompanying book, The Book of Thoth (or vice-versa), these large cards make excellent Altarpieces for Ceremonial Pathworking. The art-deco paintings by Lady Frieda Harris remain fresh and exhilarating to this day, perhaps because the imagery evoked by Crowley is so timelessly ensconced in the collective consciousness of Western man. While this is primarily a Tarot deck for the accomplished practitioner of Ceremonial and Thelemic Magick, the beginner shall find in both the deck and the book a firm foundation, to be returned to again and again in their studies and practice. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot Deck Review: This beautiful tarot deck, when purchased along with "The Tarot Handbook-Practical Applications" by Angles Arrien are two of the most highly powerful instruments of guidance. Practical, spiritual, mystical, Jungian and applicable to everyday life, you must work with these tools to experience the richness and the rightness of the answers you will receive. The images are rich with color and symbolism, the cards and book correspond with each other exactly so there can be no errors in interpretation, especially for beginners. As a tool for meditation and personal growth and information, this is what I come back to over and over again. THE TRUTH IS POWERFUL !
Rating: Summary: good deck Review: this deck is good. the cards are bigher than most and the symbols and stuff are easier to read. you don't have to 'look for' anything. its a good deck and you'll be able to understand it nicely. :)
