Rating: Summary: One word description: Dark. Review: I have used several different decks in my nearly twenty years of reading. Each deck has it's own merits, and I believe that most of the strength in a reading comes from the reader, and the cards are just a tool the reader is using. There are decks I prefer for certain situations however, and when I want painfully accurate, this deck is the one I reach for. It has an attitude, and has never given me a very positive reading. The Thoth deck is well worth it if you feel a connection with the darker or 'gothy' side of the road.
Rating: Summary: Adept 5=6 Review: I have utilized the Thoth Tarot Deck for approximately 14 years, and I highly recommend it as the Best Deck currently available. It was the Tarot Deck that was recommended to me as a Neophyte 0=0 of the Hermetic Order of the New Aeon. Please note that this particular Form of the Deck is rather Large. It is more suitable for professional readings than the Smaller Deck, however, the colors on this Deck are not as vibrant as those on the Smaller Deck. The Thoth Tarot Deck is based upon the mystical system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. To the un-initiated this proves to be rather confusing at times. For example, the Minor Arcana are devoid of the Traditional Pictures often associated with them. Instead, the Aspects (ie. Wands, Cups, Swords, and Disks) of the Minor Arcana are arranged according to the Tree of Life glyph of the Qabalah (ie. 10 of Disks = Wealth, since it corresponds to Malkuth-Kingdom in the Alchemical Element of Earth). Also, the Minor Arcana are associated with various Astrological Signifiers (ie. 10 of Disks = Wealth, since it represents Mercury in Virgo and corresponds to the 3rd Decan of Virgo known as Bootes). The Thoth Tarot Deck is the most Accurate Deck available today. Aleister Crowley discovered that "Tzaddi is not Star".(Liber Al vel Legis 1:57) This simply means that the Hebrew letter known as Tzaddi, which is associated with The Star in the Traditional Decks, should really be associated with The Emperor instead, and, therefore, the Hebrew letter known as Heh should be applied to The Star. This solves the Riddle of the Sphinx and completes the Circle of the Zodiac, since Tzaddi refers to Aries and Heh signifies Aquarius. No other Deck has corrected this Error!! The Thoth Tarot Deck is the only Corrected Deck!! Also, the artwork by Frieda Harris is absolutely stunning. It is very Impressionist and utilizes Light profoundly. In fact, these Cards can serve as an excellent Catalyst for Psychic Power, a method that can be ascertained through my own Mystical Order known as "Chavurah Nogah - Guild of Venus". The only "possible" detriment to the Thoth Tarot Deck is that fact that it is intrically linked to Aleister Crowley's own Religion of Thelema. Therefore, a few of the Trumps or ATU (Major Arcana) and the Minor Arcana are substantially different in meaning from the Traditional Decks. For example, ATU XI has been changed from Strength to Lust. This is due to the Thelemic doctrine concerning the Scarlet Lady Babylon and the Beast 666 from Revelation, whereas the Traditional Decks demonstrate a female version of Daniel in the Lion's den. Other than this, this Tarot Deck comes highly recommended. Shalom - Soror Samhain
Rating: Summary: The Most Popular Tarot Deck, Astouding Accuracy in Readings Review: I have worked with this deck for many years, and I must say that it gives very accurate results. I do not think it is a great Beginner's Deck (try Rider-Waite for that, or purchase one of the books mentioned below)--however, the woman who created this deck infused a wealth of information into the Artwork. The Major Arcana are quite Beautiful and the Esoteric Symbolism worked into the Deck, throughout, is a Wealth of Knowledge. The placement of two Major Arcana cards are different than most standard decks, but comparable with a set of Egyptian Tarot Cards, from another Mystery school (and, as I have been informed by a reader of my reviews, many decks previous to this era, had the same attributions). As with all things in life, it is best to investigate many different branches of this field of study, but I know that Most of the Tarot Readers I have met use The Thoth Deck more than any other deck in their collection. The Wonderful Artwork and Fascinating Symbolism give the Reader a vast-array of information to draw-from. My Wife is a locally renowned Tarot Reader and she swears by this deck, for accuracy....and, ALL of her friends swear by her Accuracy. The Thoth Deck has some Great Companion Books, such as: "The Tarot Handbook : Practical Applications of Ancient Visual Symbols," by Angeles Arrien --and, of course, "The Book of Thoth" by Aleister Crowley, Frieda Harris (Illustrator). I suggest buying the hand-sized Deck, because Large Decks are usually very cumbersome and it is hard to get a good psychokenetic feel for the cards. It is always best to have a deck that can be easily manipulated in the hands, for better accuracy in readings. Thousands of people believe this is the best deck on the market, and I am one of them. I also highly recommend Lon Duquette's Ceremonial Tarot Deck, to be used in conjunction with The Thoth Deck.
Rating: Summary: Excellent deck, but too big and the colours are *dead*. Review: I like the Thoth deck a lot, but this edition has two major problems. First, the cards are rather large which make the deck hard to shuffle. Second, the cards have a greenish hue and the colours are somewhat dead, especially compared to the other edition. Personally, I recommnd people to buy the smaller livlier coloured edition.
Rating: Summary: I love these cards Review: I love the Tarot. I have like a hundred different decks, and they're the only things I keep organized and safe (yes, my wand and athame are somewhere under my bed), and these cards are easily my favourite out of all my decks. I know the cards themselves aren't supposed to have power, but my deck has some strange thing going on with it (although I have been known to do some strange things concerning Crowley). In fact, the night I got the cards I couldn't let go of them and actually SLEPT with them. I also lost them once, but was drawn to them so I knew exactly where they were (unlike with my athame). But you can't go totally by what I'm saying because I sometimes carry powers to far and weird stuff happens. ANYWAY, THESE ARE GREAT CARDS, but NOT for beginners. The pictures are great, and give you a great sense of the Tarot. If you really like the Tarot and are intrested in Crowley, these are definatley (did I spell that right?) for you.
Rating: Summary: Thoth Review: I read from four decks daily. There are two decks I recommend strongly for every reader: Thoth and Gilded. I also read with Osho Zen and Golden decks. Regretful Note: Golden has a US Game Logo on the face of each card, but the quality is still there. The Thoth and Gilded decks are far greater than my words can be here. These two decks are must haves, I hope to enjoy them for as long as possible. Thank you God!
Rating: Summary: Thoth Tarot Deck...not the book Review: I was looking for this deck, but the cards are so large that they are impossible to use and the colors are faded and washed out...the original deck that I had was smaller in size and the colors were vibrant...I'd send these back but re-shipping is not worth the time and effort.
Rating: Summary: Don't purchase the deck printed in Belgium!! Review: I was very disappointed when I received this deck. I fell in love with the Thoth Tarot after recieving a reading from a friend. Her cards were beautifully vibrant. I immediately ordered this deck. When it arrived, I was stunned to discover that the cards were not as beautiful as I remembered. The cards had a murky green tinge to them. When I compared them to my friend's deck, I discovered that they were not the same. Her deck was printed in Switzerland and mine was printed in Belgium. There was a huge difference in the appearance and feel of the cards. The green tint on the cards printed in Belgium made readings seem ominous and foreboding. I had to search the Internet for months before I found someone who had a copy of the large deck printed in Switzerland. At that time Amazon did not have the Swiss version, however, they now have it listed as "Swiss Crowley Large Thoth Tarot Deck"..... Ifyou can get a copy of the Swiss deck, I highly recommend it for it'sbeauty and powerful readings. But don't waste your money on the deckprinted in Belgium. It is an insult to thebeautiful art work of LadyFrieda Harris and not at all a pleasures to read with.
Rating: Summary: A word of caution Review: I've been reading with Thoth for 13 years and for me it is the only deck I get truly accurate readings from. Just to let perspective buyers know that this deck is not for the faint of heart, those only interested in white magick, or those who cannot handle a fair amount of shadow with their sunlight. One more thing, this deck chose me a long time ago and I never read with the Rider-Waite or any other "beginning" decks. Do not start with this deck, otherwise you may find yourself unable to read with anything else. I am attempting to teach a young lady the Tarot right now, and am having a great deal of difficulty because of this. I will not allow her the Thoth, and so it is hard to explain a beginner deck to one of the uninitiated. For those of you who have been chosen by the deck, you probably know what I mean. For those just starting out, do look at The Golden Rider-Waite as the colors are much prettier than the original.
Rating: Summary: One of the best decks available for experienced readers Review: If you have at least three years of experience with reading one of the many Rider-Waite based decks and want something a bit more challenging, Crowley's Thoth deck is one of the best around. Crowley departs from the Waite-style decks in several areas. Certain cards are given different numbers and names. Strength, for instance, becomes Lust,Temperance is Art, and Justice is Adjustment. The concept of reversals is replaced by Elemental Dignities, which leads to more nuanced readings. The system of attributes is based on the Kabbalah, so experience or knowledge of this is helpful as well. Crowley uses a Golden Dawn derived system of correspondence, but departs from this by moving the Star, as per his communication with Awaiss. Lady Frieda Harriss' surrealistic artwork perfectly compliments Crowley's wild spiritual vision. Many of the cards contain not situations, but totally abscract representations. This makes the deck more useful for deep spiritual readings than for bread and butter divination. A perfect deck for esoteric contemplation or pre-ritual divination.
