Rating: Summary: Inspirational! Review: Most of my friends have read this book, so it's been recommended by more than one person. When one of them gave me the book in Spanish I read it voraciously and loved it! I bought the book in English for my son (20) who is trying to find his own treasure, and this book was a source of inspiration for him,(so I met my objective). It's a parabole that must be passed down like a torch.
Rating: Summary: So much wisdom in such a simple tale! Review: Mr. Coelho is such a gifted story teller, his books almost sing to you. THE ALCHEMIST is a very simple tale but so full of wisdom, you can't read it but once. If you're looking for just any story, this is not for you. If you're on a personal quest towards spiritual growth, then make sure you have this on your shelf.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting fable that uplifts the spirit realistically. Review: On a rare occasion, there have been times that I have come across a book that makes my soul long for everything natural and God given... Things such as the rays from the sun against my skin, or insight on the cultures near and far. The Alchemist invites readers on an expedition that satisfies ones apprieciation for all that is taken for granted in our everyday lives. An enchanting read that got better as I continued...not letting me down at any point.

Rating: Summary: Follow your Dream - but only if you're male Review: The book is simply written and easy to read in about 4 hours. It's heavily Christian in orientation and if you've read the Bible, there's really no surprises because most of it's cobbled together from that. That's not to say it's not well executed. The writing is engaging. The theme is: follow your dream and you'll end up smart, wealthy and loved by wonderful girl, etc, etc. Yes, girl. Make no mistake, this book only wants men/boys to follow their dreams. If your female, forget it. In the entire book there are 2 women. One is an old gypsy fortune teller, the other is Fatima the lead character's "love" interest. Fatima's "dream" by the way is for a man to come and love her! And that's her only dream! Fatima stays by the well at the oasis - waiting dutifully because that's her "destiny" - while he trots off into the desert to find his "dream". Apparently women are only supposed to want to be loved by a man and hang around working where he last saw them while he is busy in the desert fulfilling his dream. And I might add, in a month of courting, he meets her every day at the well, and never once does the author depict the boy offering to draw the water for her -- I guess drawing water is her "destiny" and him sitting and looking on admiringly is his. What a surprise. This story made me really sad. The king is male, the alchemist is male, the warriors are male, the caravan leader is male, the thief is male, the bartender is male, the crystal shop owner is male, the chieftan is male, the textile merchant is male . . . I'll bet if we looked at the hawks, camels, and horses, they'd all be male too. In this book, if you aren't a daughter who can't read and is facinated by shiny objects, a brainless ewe, an feared and hated gypsy, or an anjou dotting on the lead, there's no dream for you and if you are one of these categories, God help you, because you're only there to make some male dreamer's dream come true. I don't fault the concept of following your dream, in deed I applaude it, but this book will crush the thought of it out of you if you're a girl or woman. Recommended only for reading by people that don't really think too highly of women, and/or want their daughters to have no chance in life and their sons to grow up to think of women as appendages and ornaments. Money would be better spent on reading the 17th century play of the same name.
