Rating: Summary: Demythologizing Science/Faith Conflict Review: Science and Christianity: Conflict or Coherence does an excellent job of pulling together a history of the thinking of a large number of scientists over the several centuries of modern science regarding the underlying belief systems that motivated their pursuits.Dr. Schaefer also offers quick, concise answers to many questions people ask about the assumed conflict between true science and the Christian faith, and does so without being trite or simplistic. Even those with a casual interest in the biological and physical sciences will recognize names of great men of science but they probably have never read about how their beliefs spurred them on in their research. Even in an age where we are more self-conscious about connecting the people to their scientific discoveries, books rarely delve into their personal lives. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious to learn about the real coherence between true science and a life-commitment to Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah sent to us by God. William Bordeaux, D.A. Professor of Chemistry Huntington College
Rating: Summary: Book Captures Author's Public Wit & Personna Review: Science and Christianity: Conflict or Coherence? by Henry F. Schaefer, III Having "seen the movie" with great pleasure, I was reticent to "read the book," thinking it would lose something. I was not disappointed when I finally did. I have been in Dr. Schaefer's audience many times as his lecture host, international liaison and traveling companion. "How could a book," I therefore wondered, "capture the warmth, spontaneous wit, wonder, and disarming humor that make Fritz so appealing to curious academics, young and old?" Indeed Science and Christianity does all that, transporting you into Schaefer's hundreds of public lectures on the university circuit. Not only are these lectures timelessly preserved from two decades, but they are fresh. I was delighted to see the new scholarship and developments in a chapter which I last heard ten years ago." - David DeHuff, M.A., Christian Leadership Ministries at the University of Pennsylvania
Rating: Summary: A Collision that evaporates Review: That there should be a collision between religious scholars and scientists as to how scientific data should be viewed in light of the Bible is due in part to the methodology each employs along the path of knowledge toward Truth. The religious scholar tends to walk a straight path from A to Z, whereas the scientist meanders from point to point, as theories gain strength on the basis of consistency or new data, and others are discarded for the same reason. The scientist is not "vacillating", but following the true path which the discipline requires. Dr. Schaefer weaves a personal tale of how the collision is more a product of initial viewpoint rather than data, and how (as the title of the book announces, as an option) the resolution, whether forming quickly in the life of a scientist or with the passage of years, is one of coherence. (Have I given away the ending?)
Rating: Summary: the secret of science Review: The best kept secret of science is how strongly it points towards a creator and dovetails with Christianity. In this marvelously lucid book, the eminent physical chemist Henry Schaefer unfolds the secret.
Rating: Summary: Geologist endorses excellent read Review: This book is an excellent read on the facts surrounding the exciting lives of many talented scientists who have enjoyed their scientific discipline and honoured God as their creator. The material in this easy-to-read book has been carefully researched over the past two decades and presented to thousands at universities all over the world. The four public lectures given in Canberra and Sydney (Australia) are included in this book adding to the subject matter of dedicated research, scientific excellence, jubilant discovery, accurate recording of factual information, and acknowledging God's sovereign design.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book Review: This is a wonderful book, and I read through it immediately. The liveliness of the lectures shines through in the printed word.
Rating: Summary: excellent Review: This is an excellent book. To the reviewer who said Christianity is naive and how psychology has all the answers: A. You don't understand what realy christianity is all about. B. Psychology is in many ways an overused pseudosdiscipline, especially when compared with quantum chemistry or theology. C. You probably thing Christianity is just a Psychological mechanism. Isn't your calling it naive just a "psychological defense mechanism" for your view. Sorry, but the psychology argument works both ways.
Rating: Summary: Quantum Coherence Review: This is an intensely personal book. It should be required reading for every scientist who is willing to publically identify themselves as a Christian. It is also recommended for all people interested in an honest exploration of the interaction of science and Christianity.
Rating: Summary: A Non-scientific Perspective Review: What a thrill to experience such a powerful affirmation of our God! Of course, I was exposed to somewhat more technical information than I am used to, but it seemed to be very appropriate for the topic, and well presented. I was moved and amused by Dr. Schaefer's very delightful essays.
