Rating: Summary: A Reasonable Faith Review: Physical Scientist, Henry Schaefer, has written a book, largerly based of his lectures at Universities, about the true nature of science in its relation to reason, Christianity and truth. The main aim of this book, is not to trench through all the technological and scientific detials that have been tred elsewhere, but instead demonstrate through history and science that one can, and often many are, highly intellectual scientist who are also faithful, practicing Christians. He uses history to show that the founding scientist who have laid the foundation of scientific discovery and thought were in fact Christians and pursued their vocations because they believed that God created a wold in which they could invetiagte according to rational governing laws. He also mentions the many Christian-scientists today who are among the elite in their professions, therefore discounting the often spread myth that those who espouse a creation model of any sort are fundamentalists Christians and not "really" scientists. He does mention certian scientific discoveries that lead one to conclude that their is a God and easily shows the folly and highjacking of science terminology but many atheists such as Dawkins and Huxley. At times, his words overlap (due to it being based of the lectures) and he could have spent more time on certian scientific data and concepts that are widely distorted or misunderstood by both evolutionists and young earth creationists. I wish he had of went into more detials why he was not a young earth creationists because this is a point of contention within the non-evolutionists camp. All in all, a good book.

Rating: Summary: An Intelligent View of God and the Universe Review: Professor Schaefer has shown well that science is consistent with Christianity from the perspective of a modern Protestant scholar. He presents his case with the consistency of an Aquinas and the fervor of a John Wesley. Here we find that many prominent scientists are really more than simply Deists, but they are many times articulate and passionate Christians, devoted to a real personal and sovereign God of us all. Professor Schaefer's own personal quest is a strong affirmation of his and his wife's need for a loving and benevolent God in their lives. He and Karen are living proof of the relentless pursuit of that great Hound of Heaven; they understand that great personal realization of Augustine that He has truly made us for Himself.
Rating: Summary: Refreshing Discussion @ Christianity and Science Review: Professor Schaefer is refreshing, humorous, and insightful about a "hot topic" today -- the intersection of science and religion (or more specifically, Christianity). This world-class scientist lets his readers benefit from the decades he has interacted with his prominent peers in science around the world. Reading his book was like sitting down one-on-one with the author to discuss his views and the views of many prominent scientists he quotes. Professor Schaefer's book is bound to stimulate Christian and non-Christian readers to think more deeply about science and Christianity. I am confident a wide range of readers will enjoy this well-written book as much as I did. Professor Schaefer's book is a "must read" for 2004.

Rating: Summary: A GREAT book Review: Professor Schaefer's book is a great book for anyone who is interested in how a world-class scientist can also be a Bible believing Christian. I deliberately did NOT say how he can "reconcile" his faith and his science, since the whole point of this book is that there isn't anything to reconcile. An intelligent reading of the Bible, even when it is considered to be the inerrant word of God, does not produce any conflict with solid science. There are some open questions and mysteries to be sure, but no real conflicts. Read Dr. Schaefer's book to see!
Rating: Summary: Great Christian / Great Scientist Review: Schaefer has written an honest and highly personal account which shows that it IS possible to be a devout Christian AND an excellent scientist. To his credit, and unlike other books with similar purposes, he does not try to bully or trick the reader into agreement. Instead he presents his case and objectively and leaves it to the reader to judge for him/herself. This book will interest non-Christians looking for insight into how a Christian scientist reconciles reason and religion. It should be mandatory reading for Christian students considering a career in academic science, especially those who perceive that they must choose between the academy and the Church. Schaefer makes it clear that there is a mission to the academy which the Church has been neglecting for some time. There is a need for more Christians who are scientific leaders. This book will surely entertain and enlighten, but more importantly Schaefer's conviction will inspire Christians and non-Christians alike.

Rating: Summary: Fuel for Thought Review: Schaefer's content, though deep, is distilled down so that we can all enjoy. I have long felt that the perceived division between scientists and Christianity was more in the minds of the rookies than inherent within the halls of the academy. Indeed, this book underscores the fact that there are many scientists who honor God.
Rating: Summary: Book Captures Author's Public Wit & Personna Review: Science and Christianity: Conflict or Coherence? by Henry F. Schaefer, III Having "seen the movie" with great pleasure, I was reticent to "read the book," thinking it would lose something. I was not disappointed when I finally did. I have been in Dr. Schaefer's audience many times as his lecture host, international liaison and traveling companion. "How could a book," I therefore wondered, "capture the warmth, spontaneous wit, wonder, and disarming humor that make Fritz so appealing to curious academics, young and old?" Indeed Science and Christianity does all that, transporting you into Schaefer's hundreds of public lectures on the university circuit. Not only are these lectures timelessly preserved from two decades, but they are fresh. I was delighted to see the new scholarship and developments in a chapter which I last heard ten years ago." - David DeHuff, M.A., Christian Leadership Ministries at the University of Pennsylvania
