Rating: Summary: great on motivation, lacking in practical suggestions Review: Even though I don't believe in Feng Shui, the first part of this book was a great motivator for me. It got me started cleaning out closets and organizing cabinets, which I had been meaning to do since we moved two years ago. But I suspect this book will work best for those without kids. I was disappointed in the lack of specific strategies to deal with the incredible amount of stuff that comes into our house every day. happy meal toys, birthday party favor bags, pine cones, feathers and rocks they collect outside. And paper! We can get 3-5 lbs of paper a day between junk mail, homework, schedules, newsletters. it's endless. I don't think she has a clue what it's like to live with kids. If you live alone in a 3rd world country, sure you can keep your clutter down and never get to the point where there's more than two bagsful of trash in your house at any one time. But me, I'd be happy if I could just keep my kitchen counter clear. I've found other books written specifically for families to be much more helpful (and in fact, Family Fun magazine has some great ideas in its May 2001 issue, far more useful than the vague "throw it all out" attitude that Ms. Kingston has).
Rating: Summary: It inspired me Review: I hate clutter with a passion. However,I myself have become a bit of a clutter bug. Last night before I even finished this book,I went down to the basement and went through my things. Alot got thrown away or putting in a box to be giving away and returned. I found so much stuff that pertained to my ex. Boy,did it feel good to get rid of that. This book was so inspiring to me,I had to take a break from reading it and go declutter! I reccomend this book to anyone, and I mean anyone.
Rating: Summary: This book finally helped us de-clutter Review: I read five books last year on de-cluttering. None of them really helped us. Turns out we collect clutter for entirely different reasons. Books that try to deal with "personality" just didn't seem to work for us. Books that more or less said "get over it" also didn't work. But we have to pare down because we are going to move twice in the next two years (ugh.)The secret to "Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui" was to find why we both were keeping some things. (There is a section with helpful questions about why you keep stuff, such as inheriting it, sentimental feelings, habits, family habits, and even grief.) In our case, a friend from childhood and a parent had both died within two years and this caused a desire to cling to a lot of old things. Excess clutter is thought to sap energy. It certainly saps concentration and gathers asthma-inducing dust. Now our apartment looks better, breathes better and yes, smells fresher and thanks to this book. First one I've ever read that could help two different people living together because it deals with the individual motivations behind the junk they keep.
Rating: Summary: This book ROCKS! Review: With this introduction to Feng Shue, Karen Kingston makes it easy to get started with this way of life which makes so much sense....but can seem overwhelming at first to us Westerners. After reading the first few pages I knew that this book was going to get me out of my rut that I'd been in -- for a few years now. In fact over the last 6 months I had been in an extremely 'stuck' place where I couldn't pay my bills on time, I could't arrive anywhere on time, and my life was generally stagnant. I am from a long line of clutter holics....but thanks to this book I have stopped that family trait. This book opened doors for me that I didn't think would ever open. Thank you Karen for sharing your wisdom....and for sharing your beautiful voice with us(I recommend the audio version too -- she has a beautiful voice)!!
Rating: Summary: Beware Review: What is the fuss about. This book is as useless as you can get. There is just about no feng shui ( a small section only) principles outlined or presented. The book just talks about people keeping junk and then a light goes on in their brain and suddenly they begin to clean their junk. WOW! They usually go like this. " A reader called me (the author) and said that after reading my book she got so excited that she just cleaned the attic and threw out all the junk accumulated there." Well it worked for me also. I got up and got rid of this junk ( this book)
Rating: Summary: Fabulous Book! Review: I heard about this book by word of mouth. Everyone I know who has read it loves it! As I look around my house, I am amazed at how many possessions I have that I don't use - everything from old clothes to makeup to cleaning products. Karen Kingston is right that clearing the clutter frees up energy and that you can feel the difference in the room. Karen suggests doing small projects if all the clutter is overwhelming and it's the perfect way to get things done. I try to do a small declutter project every day and I'm gradually getting my house cleared out. The ironic thing is that the more I give things away, the more I realize that I don't need so many possessions. I'm actually saving money by not buying things. Either I use up what I've got or I realize I don't need it. Clear your clutter - It's so energizing!
Rating: Summary: ADD Life Saver! Review: This book was EXCELLENT because it gave a psychological perspective and support to getting rid of clutter in one's life. Clearly and simply written, the book encouraged me to get busy getting rid of things and changing my home space right away. For those interested in Feng Shui, it is an excellent place to start because how can one focus on decorating amidst a messy house/office? There are members of our family who have Attention Deficit Disorder. One of the side affects of this is that things tend to get left uncompleted and the whole life gets cluttered. The content and results acheived from this book has truly assisted the ADD members of our family to function more successfully!! I also feel the tape is a VALUABLE idea for people with busy lives (or who lack the time / focus to read an entire book.)
Rating: Summary: I could have bought another book Review: Do me a favor, buy another book! Take out all the feng shui psychobabble and what you have is just a book about clutter. Well, it served as a reference when I wanted to clear my clutter but if you are serious about doing a feng shui on your home, go for the traditional feng shui - the one that the ancient Chinese used. First time I heard about feng shui was last month. I did some research and I've decided I'll go with the tried and true traditional feng shui. These quick fix books are not worth it!
Rating: Summary: This Book ROCKED my Cluttered Life Review: I LOVE THIS BOOK! Clearing your clutter helps you, those that live with you, and those around you. There is an overwhelming amount of literature on the topic of Feng Shui, where does one begin to learn? Karen Kingston's "Clear Your Clutter" will provide the perfect beginning. Not only does is this book based on clearing tangible clutter but Karen also delves into the INtangible clutter, spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental. She FOCUSES clearly on the reasoning behind clearing clutter...to bring new and better things INTO your life, you must remove the old and musty clutter. Her probing insight leaves questions not only DO you keep clutter, but WHY you keep clutter, are you in denial about your clutter? Was it inherited? Are your parents packrats? Were there old emotional attachments that are now gone? I had never heard of this book, I just saw it on the shelf in the self-help section and thought, "Now THAT is something I NEED." Truly, this book has helped me to re-evaluate all the "junk" that I have been holding on to for years. Karen Kingston enlightens her readers by pointing out that clutter in ANY part of your house cultivates weight on/in your life. She shows how the house is divided by the Feng Shui bagua and which sections/corners of your house represent which part of your life. This is about as far as she goes into Feng Shui because the purpose of the book is to help you clear the clutter so that you can GET to the Feng Shui balancing part Not only did I learn a great deal about the author through this book, but a great deal about myself. I even gave my first copy to a loved one and bought another for myself so I could highlight it and make notes. Bottomline, this is MORE than just a self-help book.
Rating: Summary: buy this book now! Review: if you want to change your life, you have to start somewhere. this will help clear a path though your house. so, you can start a clear path in your life and be more focus on what you really want and need in your life.
