Review: A lot of books that I have read that deal with spirits, seem to have a dark tone to them. This seems friendly, like your talking to your friend. Communicating with spirits has some "mini stories" of medium Rita S. Berkowitz that they give throughout the book. This also has exercises to help develop your mediumistic abilities, information on the birth of the human soul-as perceived through theological, metaphysical, and spiritual viewpoints.

I appreciated the layout, content and informative nature of the subject matter. Rita Berkowitz sounds like a remarkable individual with amazing abilities as both a medium and artist, and you'll enjoy reading about her spiritual encounters and viewing her extraordinary spirit drawings that are interspersed throughout the book. When I finished the book, though, it left me wanting more in-depth information than simply using guided meditations and understanding that the beginning of your journey into mediumship feels like you are imagining your interactions with spirit. I would like to know what to expect beyond this--when you become more in tune to the communication, what does it sound like, or look like? Do you eventually see spirits with open eyes, or are they manifested only in your mind's eye with your physical eyes closed? Or, if your dominant mode is clairaudience, do the voices eventually sound as if a real person is speaking to you, or does a spirit's voice always manifest itself as your own thoughts amplified? As you evolve, must you continue to go into trance every time to connect, or does the communication eventually become second nature? This book offers extensive information regarding what you can expect in the beginning of your mediumistic explorations, and overall it does offer more in the way of explaining the nature of mediumship than other books I have read on the same subject. In this sense, it is more informative than instructional, and I recommend keeping this in mind if you are seeking to refine your techniques. For serious explorers who seek to become professional mediums, Rita Berkowitz suggests either studying mediumship at a Spiritualist Church, finding a medium who is a mentor, joining a mediumship circle, or creating a circle of your own to further your abilities. These opportunities are very limited to me as I live far away from a metropolitan area in a rural setting. It can be disconcerting to pick up a book for the intent on learning more about a subject only to be told you need to find a school or teacher to learn about it. For the most part, however, the history of mediumship, descriptions of the different planes of existence, spirit guides, earthbound spirits, telepathy, psychometry, spirit communication through dreams, near-death experiences, and astral projection are covered at great length. Recommended books, websites, and spiritualist schools for mediumship are included in an appendix. I express my gratitude to Rita Berkowitz and Deborah Romaine for putting together an incredible and enjoyable book.

I had a reading done on a lark and was floored when she immediately began telling me that my recently deceased mother-in-law had been trying to contact me or my husband. My mother-in-law passed information through Rita for me to tell my husband that explained many questions that had been left unanswered when she died. If the information hadn't been right on, which it was, her accurate drawing of my mother-in-law would have been enough to convince me. I've had two more readings with Rita since then and she's the real deal...no question about it. As soon as I heard Rita was writing a book, I placed an advance order for it and it just as good as I had hoped it would be. I am fortunate to be in a position to meet with Rita when our schedules overlap but for those who cannot, this book is the next best thing. Every reading Rita does is for healing purposes and the healing can be for the person having the reading done or the person who has died. In my case, it was a healing for my husband and I think also for my mother-in-law who died with a lot of anger and bitterness still in her. I believe Rita wrote the book to help other obtain this same kind of healing.

Like most of the books in the "Idiot's Guide" series, it's easy to follow and practical. So why do I rate it one star? Because in this case, clear and concise instructions are a negative. It's like a book that gives great instructions on how to become a drug addict. I strongly suggest taking time to consider the dangers of communicating with demonic spirits before taking this leap. It's actually very EASY to communicate with demonic spirits, even without instructions. They WANT to communicate with you, but you can bet it's not to help you in any way! No one dabbles in the occult and comes out of it for the better. I have to assume that most readers interested in this type of book are open-minded. Why not try communicating with a much higher power to get true enlightenment and direction?
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fascinating and Informative Review: Over the last few months, my interest in the sprit world has grown and I've tried to learn more and more about it. When I heard about this book, I realized that it would probably be an excellent one for me to read. I was right. The authors take the time to explain a lot of different "psychic-related" topics, but they do so in a straightforward way, and they do not go off on any type of "new age tangent." One thing they talk about is energy. The more books I read about the "spirit world," the more I realize energy is the basis for their and our human existence. The authors throughout the book use numerous different exercises to help the reader tune in to various psychic skills. In some ways, it's almost "interactive." Some of the exercises are meditations of one kind or another. I've come to realize that meditations and energy seem to go hand in hand in doing any type of "psychic work." The book also contains numerous stories about spirit contact, as well as numerous drawings done by one of the authors of spirits on "the other side." I found these stories and drawings to be fascinating and for me further proof that spirits do indeed exist. It makes me wonder what spirits I have "behind the scenes" guiding my life. I'm thankful a book like this is now available because it answered some questions for me about the spirit realm. The back of the book contains further resources, which is good because while this book answered many questions for me, it's provided me with further questions and the motivation to learn more.

The whole tone of the book was warm and friendly. It was like having a conversation with a friend rather than reading a manual. I found that this book complimented my views on death and the afterlife. I recommend this book highly to folks looking to broaden there horizons or improve their skills.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A Little too light-hearted Review: When I first saw the title of this book, I laughed! But once I started reading it, I found it to be interesting, intelligent, and enjoyable. The author(s) know the topic very well and were able to convincingly demonstrate spirit contact is possible and a reliable source of putting at ease fears and concerns about what happens to us after death. What concerns me is that the subject is treated very light-hearted, like you were learning how to grow petunyas. The author(s) put the reader at ease by saying that as long as you envision the protection of white light, you won't encounter any negative/malicious entities, only those who are sometimes lost or confused. They go on to say that a person who feels tormented by demons or out of control, not themselves, or suicidal is never possessed but rather mentally ill. These statements do a disservice to the reading audience because the possibility of these negative entities is not only real, but disturbingly common, and many people suffering from agonizing mental illness have recovered fully upon location and release of attached negative spirits.
For more on this topic, and so that the reader can find a balance of viewpoints, I reccommend the works of Dr. William J. Baldwin.
