Rating: Summary: If you like cults, you'll love this book Review: After browsing through this book and realizing many of the things Jack was saying couldn't be backed up with scripture, I decided to do some research on him. Please, Please, Please, do a simple search on yahoo.com under his name. You will read countless reports of how the gospel he is teaching is far different from the gospel of Christ. He uses his time at Dallas Theological Seminary to boost his credibility, but they have acknowledged his time there was long before he got into a cult movement. Please be very weary....

Rating: Summary: Excellent Book by an inspiring teacher Review: Any Christian should take the time to read this Spirit-inspired book. And believe me, you'll have to budget some time! I read this book over several weeks, because sometimes a single paragraph could provide you with so much hard-hitting insight that you'll have to sit back and digest it for a few hours, maybe while reading relevant passages in the Bible and praying. Realising that the Lord isn't the absent God many religions teach Him to be, will change your life ( spiritual and day-to-day ) for ever. Go buy this book, sent a serious prayer for guidance and insight to our Father, and start reading - it will be one of the best things you ever did!

Rating: Summary: Synopsis Review: Handsome, intelligent Robert, a seminary student with a promising pastoral career ahead of him, stood in front of his Hebrew professor to request that his late assignment be accepted. Little did Robert know that his most secret, ugly sin, which he had been unable to overcome and had hidden for many years, was about to be exposed.
"As I was listening to Robert, he faded away and in his place I saw the word "PORNOGRAPHY" in large, capital, block letters," says Jack Deere, Robert's Hebrew professor and author of the new book, Surprised by the Voice of God. "For months, I had been praying for God to speak to me like this, asking him to impart to me supernatural knowledge about people so that I might minister to them more effectively," says Deere. "Now at last it was finally beginning to happen. God was telling me supernaturally about the sin of one of my students."
Deere recounts his struggle in knowing how to act on this supernaturally imparted information, commonly referred to as a "word of knowledge" by charismatic Christians. In Surprised by the Voice of God, Deere first gives a brief overview of biblical and historical instances where God has directly communicated with man. He uses personal accounts from his life and others as proof that God still speaks to his children today in the same ways he did to the people of the Bible: "through an audible voice, through dreams, visions, circumstances, fleeces, inner impressions, prophets, angels, and other ways, as well as through Scripture." Deere also takes the reader to the next step: learning the language of the Holy Spirit. "We don't grow automatically with the passage of time," says Deere. "Without a realistic New Testament assessment of our spiritual experience, we will never progress in the kingdom of God."
Deere confesses that he "had a theoretical belief that God speaks to us apart from the Bible" before his experience with Robert, who as far as Deere knows, went on to live a clean life, free of his former bondage. But th
Rating: Summary: Open Yourself to the Blessing Review: How long we have cheated ourselves of being open to the workings of God's awesome Spirit in our lives. This book isn't a showcase for shenanigans. Indeed not. It is an honest and benevolent description of how we can experience the encouragement, comfort and joy of the Holy Spirit. I very much admire how Mr. Deere admonishes us all to keep in the Word, and how he provides guidance on how to test false spirits and false prophecies that spring from pride and self-interest. God is working in a dynamic and loving fashion in His Spirit. Open yourself to exploring that blessing. Mr. Deere's book lovingly shows you how to do so.
Rating: Summary: YES! Clear, direct & scripturally sound. Review: I have a sermon titled "Hearing God." In trying to flesh it out into a written article, I discovered Dr. Deere's book "Surprised by the Voice of God." It so closely paralleled what I was writing that I was amazed. Jack Deere masterfully mixes the experiential and anecdotal with solid theological understanding. Every Christian Pastor would benefit from having this book in his/her library. I have recommended this book to the participants on the EnterActs Board as our first Book Club choice.

Rating: Summary: I couldn't possibly overstate the importance of this book! Review: I have been a Christian for over forty years. I have always been taught and believed that God speaks today ONLY through the Bible. In a gracious and loving way, Dr. Deere makes the inarguable case for a God Who speaks in MANY ways today, even as He has since the Creation. I can't find words to express how important this teaching has been to my personal relationship with God through the Lord Jesus. The potential for growing intimacy and open, two-way communication with my loving Lord fills me with hope, encouragement and excitement. I am in full-time Christian ministry (pastor of a small evangelical congregation) and I desperately needed this fresh word from God. It has been humbly and articulately presented in a very down-to-earth, yet intelligent fashion by this gifted and devoted brother in Christ. All who have--or LONG to have--a passion to KNOW the Lord Jesus, MUST read and prayerfully consider the teachings of this tremendous book.
