Summary: One of his best
Review: Paulo Coelho's book The Fifth Mountain will captivate your attention and warm your heart. It is probably my favorite of his books, along with By The River Piedra, I Sat Down and Wept. Coelho's simple yet hauntingly beautiful words will entice you to read all his other books. I've got two more books I have to read, The Pilgrimage and The Devil and Miss Prym. I can't wait until April 1st, when 11 Minutes is supposed to come out in the U.S. Let's hope for tons more from this author...I know I'll never get sick of him! The only thing that I don't like is the fact that I can't get some of his books available in English and that it took me forever to get a copy of The Devil and Miss Prym. That book, you can only get it used in the U.S., or if you're very lucky like I did, can find it new at a used book store...otherwise you have to order a new copy from the U.K., like I did to get the paperback.

Summary: Fans of "THE ALCHEMIST" - Prepare to be underwhelmed
Review: Readers of Coelho's other books will miss his usual "magic" in this title. While the first two-thirds of the story will intrigue you, by the end Elijah has become a contemporary New Age guru. The strength of the author's earlier titles was his storytelling. Let's hope Coelho bounces back with a original story of his own and leaves the retelling of the Bible to others.

Summary: Gripping story of patience, faith and love
Review: The Fifth Mountain is a wonderfully woven tale that focuses on an extract of a life lead by Elijah, the Prophet. A story that travels with his struggles, his endurance, his faith and his love towards God and the ones closest to him. Set amidst ancient times when God and idols were worshipped alike, and wars are constantly fought over land and religion, this is a story that brings forward the clear message of keeping the faith and patience in one true God and then, from there, living God's miracles. It is a good book to read on travels and a delight to absorb in!

Summary: Vision
Review: The Fifth Mountain may be Coelho's best. Inspiration, vision and readability. Paolo Coelo is one of the world's greatest living authors because his words help illuminate the human condition. The Fifth Mountain is about finding one's calling by using time wisely. I love this book.

Summary: A Poignant Emotional Journey
Review: The Fifth Mountain reflects Coehlo's progress since he wrote "The Alchemist". This work is more mature and better crafted. I was impressed by the unique historical circumstances chosen by Coehlo as the background for this novel. Coehlo does a brilliant job of avoiding the temptation of making Elijah seem too much larger than life, and treating him as a superhero to whom most readers could never relate. Rather Coehlo creates the portrait of a man who is very human, undergoing a very real struggle to find his faith and understand his mission in life, love, and its consequential suffering. I agree with the reader who pointed out the flaw in "The Alchemist" in that that there are many questions unaswered and unexplored, such as to why the boy was chosen for the journey. The historical background of "The Fifth Mountain" avoids this weak link by clearly establishing Elijah's historical role as the savior of Israel from Jezebel. This prevents the reader from wondering aloud "why him?" and makes for a more fluid read. This work can also be understood as a lesson for peoples of the world to recognize their common humanity and put aside centuries of hatred and misunderstandings. Despite the fact that Elijah is an outsider in the community, he is soon respected as one of its wisest members. His relationship with the young boy of the woman whom he loved is a very touching brush stroke on this work as well. This is a must read for anyone searching for a spiritual, uplifting masterpiece.

Summary: Coelho's simple writing with a strong message
Review: The Fifth Mountain speaks of Elijah the prophet who is known both to Judaism and Christianity. The Prologue by Coelho explains his primary reason for this story, which may on the surface convey a similar outcome to the 'Alchemist' yet touches on many different messages.

I loved the message that one does not always understand the reasons for the unavoidable yet in the bigger picture it all comes to light. Each person has their own unavoidable situations, as unavoidable as the weather. It is how we choose to react and the meaning we give to them which drive us to success or failure.
In many ways this philosophical idea may be compared with Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy. The meaning attached to the situation leads one to different outcomes.

Another important message is one of destiny. If one believes in a destiny or a chosen path much like Elijah the prophet, one is still required to do the actions and work towards the goal or outcome. Even if it is written in the stars that one is meant for greatness, it does not necessarily mean that one does not have to work towards it.

Summary: Super!
Review: The Good fight, the silence of God, the needing of exercise your power to find your path. One of the best books I ever read, better than The Alchemist.

Summary: Inpirational
Review: This book arrived on my book shelf at a very appropriate time for me.

A young man is torn between choosing love or choosing life's task. The outcomes of both choices are ambiguous. He has to decide sacrificing love for the betterment of his people, or sacrificing his people for the freedom to love.

To put it an oxymoron, his task is clear yet cryptic.

I feel anyone will be able to relate to the story of Elijah. Paulo Coelo brilliantly plays the movement of the mind in lifes immanent decision-making processes. And while in the middle of the book (I cannot reveal what happened..) you may begin to oddly feel the cynicism of life which we all encounter at some point, however, following Elijah through his journey turns out to be be quite the opposite.

Beautifully constructed, Paulo Coelho reminds us of how he has mastered form and function in his writing. It seems funny that I even mention that because he IS a master in his field. But when you close this book, you will be reminded of powerfully he has been able to move your mind, and perhaps even, your heart and spirit as well.

Summary: Good Story, but not his best
Review: This book is great, but Coelho has better books out there. Personally, "Veronika Decides To Die" is my favorite of his works. He is very inspirational and his works are mostly quite powerful with powerful messages of following your dreams and obeying your calling. If you're a Coelho fan you'll pick up this book no matter what. If you are not, start small with "The Alchemist", an entertaining parable of a shepherd boy who follows his dream and how the universe conspired to bring him there. His books are very spiritual, so keep that in mind when browsing.
