Rating: Summary: My favorite small edition... Review: First off, the translation on this bible is, for the most part, solid. That, in itself, isn't really a compelling reason to buy it, there are plenty of other good translations out there, some perhaps even better than this one. However, this one has hands down better notes than any other cheap paperback bible. Every book of the bible has a brief, very scholarly written introduction, and clarifying footnotes on many pages. What I really respect is that the introductions and footnotes and really, legitimately, scholarly. The moralizing commentary routinely found in some "study bibles" is here reduced to simple notes of clarification on either odd historical points or lines that are hard to translate. More than enough to recommend this one, even to non-Catholics. Martin Luther might not have particularly liked the extra books, but he did say people should read them.

Rating: Summary: Far better translations are available Review: Granted - this is the version forced into the lectionary of the Roman Catholic churches in the United States, but that is understandable considering the bishops held the copyright. I gave this a "two" rather than a "one" only because it is not so bad as a few popular bibles which are mere paraphrases. Though the content is not inaccurate, it seems the authors were so desperately trying to be "super-American" that they translated passages into American slang, ironically not realising how that can vary according to region and era. For example, in the parable of the Prodigal Son, generations would have understood the word "harlot," where "loose women" does not have the same accuracy. For a contemporary, accurate version of the Bible, in non-slaughtered language, try the Revised English Bible.
Rating: Summary: I have worn out three copies of this Bible Review: I guess I was to cheep to buy a durable copy. One made it through RCIA. One made it through Lay Ministries. An the third took its toll over the years/ I could rehash the fact that this translation was from the oldest available sacred text and the newest understanding of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. However I think it is important tat the intent of this translation was to stay true to the original wording. There is a Section on Bible in the Church in the beginning.
Rating: Summary: Eh, I'm kinda indifferent Review: I love this translation of the Bible. In addition to the Scripture, this particular edition has a list of Popes, Parables in Chronological Order, Miracles in Chronological Order, and a preface to the Bible. It also has a lot of footnotes which are very helpful to the average reader. The only drawback is that it contains no maps or other study guides, and the print is fairly small; but for the price it can't be beat.

Rating: Summary: Disgusting Translation for Catholics Review: I own the Amplified Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Oxford's World Bible KJV, and the Jewish Tanakh Old Testament, but this is my favorite Bible by far.
There are some problems with this Bible ofcourse. Goliath, who was killed by King David, was not 6 feet tall only. Atleast, I think he was quite a bit taller--atleast 8 feet tall. And I don't care for a lot of the notes written in this Bible by Catholic scholars. If you have ever read the Golden Legend, you know that Leviathan spoken about in the Book of Job is actually a dynosaur like T. Rex. yet the notes written in this Bible make him out to be just a crocodile. There is a lot of Catholic dogma written in the explanatory notes that I just don't care for, and that I probably will never care for.
However, besides the above mentioned problems, this Bible is one of the best translations ever--in fact, it is the best for me since it is so easy on my eyes. I love this Bible. I love the smell of the tan paper and printed ink in this Bible when you flip through the pages quickly that you can't find in many other Bible's out there. It smells fresh off the press.
There is also one problem that I don't like in all the Bibles I own: the editors love to subtitle and write notes into the Book of Revelation, and we Christians have been warned to never add anything, or take away anything, from the Book of Revelation. It's a sad generation that we live in when sholars just dismiss such a warning as superstition.
Rating: Summary: A Useful Study Bible Review: The NAB translation is the one used for the reading of the Mass. I have purchased the NAB Bible for my class of RCIA students (potential converts to the Catholic faith) for the last three years. Over all, it is easily readable, and I find no major flaws in interpretation with the footnotes. There have been three or four footnotes in the Gospels that raised an eyebrow, but overall I have no complaint with the integrity of this interpretation and biblical exegesis. That being said, this is not a 5 star because there are better study bibles available; however, not at the same price. The Navarre Bible is probably the best available and the Ignatius Study Bible is excellent as well. Nonetheless, you can't beat the price on this Bible and they serve wonderfully in a class and/or bible study setting. For the price and the quality, I will, without reservation, continue to purchase these.

Rating: Summary: A great translation, good notes in a low cost binding. Review: This is a translation from the original Hebrew and Greek, with reference to the Qumran documents or "Dead Sea Scrolls". Previous bibles for Catholics have been taken from the Latin Vulgate. (This translation, the NAB is different to the New American Standard Bible, the NASB.) It includes the books of the Apochropha. (These are additional historical and wisdom books, which are found in the Old Testament section of this Bible. Some put these books in a seperate section.) There are frequent, useful notes, especially in the New Testament section, and many cross-references. This particular version does lack the interesting article on English translations that appears in some NAB editions. At this price, give it a try! Or buy a copy to give away.
