Rating: Summary: A CLASSIC EXPOSE' AND A COURAGEOUS AND HEROIC EFFORT... Review: Christians of every stripe ignore the warnings in this book to their own peril. Dave Hunt has brought to light certain deceptions and compromises in the "church world" and every Christian should investigate (as "A Berean") as to what is biblically sound doctrine, and what clearly is NOT biblically sound. Have many within the Christian community been "seduced" by false doctrine? - Did Jesus WARN that such things would happen? Did Paul? Read this fascinating book and judge for yourself.

Rating: Summary: A Challenge to the Christian Community Review: Dave Hunt addresses the phenomenon sweeping the church which is encompassed by New Age thought and the seduction of motivation/success teachers such as Napoleon Hill. Using well-grounded biblical principles he reduces the health/wealth/prosperity gospel to what it is - a sham, and a shamanistic conspiracy to seduce believers into accepting the AntiChrist system. Of course, those easily offended at this critique may be put off, but if readers approach this with an open-mind, I believe the Spirit of God will reach them appropriately, and in light of the Word of God. After all, our experiences should be measured by the standard of the Word of God, as well as our reading. Like the Bereans, we should check it, to be sure it lines up with the pure, unadulterated scriptures. This book was a blessing, and I plan to read and re-read it. I would suggest the same to anyone who not only is interested in what is taking place in l999 modern churches, but anyone who is taking the claims of success gurus and disciples of Napoleon Hill. As will be revealed, Hill's philosophies not only came from questionable sources, but were totally foreign to the Truth of Scripture. A gem of a book.
Rating: Summary: I am no longer a fan of Dave Hunt or T.A. McMahon. Review: Dave Hunt professes a secret (up until the publication of this book) phileo love for T.A. McMahaon. As spiritual step-brothers they embrace one another in a way that no other dake-bonoist has. They take the writings of Rev. Finis Jennings Dake (author of the well known study bible) and peel them apart and explain them much like a person peels each layer of an onion layer by layer. They reach the center and them begin the same process with the lyrical genius of Bono from the band U2. Once they have completed step they take the skins of both onions and combine them into a new onion which they call "Dake-Bonoism." In conclusion they explain that the entire exercise wasn't something unusual but that there are many people who hold similar beliefs with regard to Dake-Bonoism. They then show how they didn't even coin the term Dake-Bonoism. This book is profitable.

Rating: Summary: Want Christian Spirituality? Review: First, I am not a fan of Mr.Hunts, although I do agree with the basic premise of this book. Which is Christian Spirituality IS NOT the same as hindu, buddihist, wiccan etc. Unfortunatly, many modern Christians are turning to these false doctrines. Second, If anyone is interested in Christian Spirituality? check out (The Way of the Pilgram and The Pilgrim Continues His Way, The Cloud of Unknowing, The Monks of New Skete: In the Spirit of Happiness) All availible at amazon.com
Rating: Summary: Discernment is called for. Review: I find it fascinating to read how people would rather follow the traditions of men, than to follow the the Lord's word. This book just proves it. Christianity isn't really supposed to be "scollarly" in human terms, but instead focus on how our Lord wants us to live. When we turn away from God's word, we become vulnerable to Demons.
Rating: Summary: worst sort of book Review: i rated this book as one star because i could not go lower. it is the worst sort of negativity i could find on religion, Jesus or anything of the sort connected with God. jesus would be appalled. this author speaks of the seduction of christianity, and yet he is the negativity that he warns of. don't waste your money. you will be sorely disappointed if you love the bible, love jesus and thought he was a rebel, a scholar, a god loving person and a perfected soul. this book is seriously derranged.
Rating: Summary: A very, very good book Review: I read this book back in 1994. It was at a time when I was deep into the health and wealth gospel. I was also a member of a well known church here in Columbus that is broadcast to many cities outside of Ohio and outside of the country. It really opened my eyes and I am grateful to God that I read this book because I began to read my Bible. Which caused me to be the Berean I should have been long ago. The teachings that I was following in the health and wealth gospel pulled me away from God not closer to Him. Most of the time the health and wealth gospel sounds like something at a multi-level marketing meeting (pick whichever company out there). Because of Mr. Hunt's book, I started reading my Bible to get to know God for Himself and not for what He can give me. I recommend it for anyone caught up in health and wealth or any false teaching. But most of all read the Bible and let the Holy Spirit lead you. That's what I did and now I fellowship in a congregation that preaches and teaches the True Gospel.
Rating: Summary: Tremendously Destructive and Counterproductive Review: I was very disappointed when I read this book. Dave Hunt has done some tremendous work in his research on cult beliefs but comes up short in this book. The book attacks many spiritual leaders in the church today: Robert Schuller, Kenneth Hagin, Kenneth Copeland, Agnes Sandford, John and Paula Sandford, Rita Bennett, Dennis and Matt Linn, John Wimber, Francis MacNutt, James Dobson and others. Because Dave Hunt focuses so much time studying cults, he focuses on the beliefs of cults rather than that on scripture. The most disturbing fact about this book is that Dave Hunt accuses leader after leader in the church of today and appears more as "the accuser of the bretheren" than the comforter. Accusation is the center of satan's work (Rev 10:10-12), and the church needs to be careful not to do this as well. Accusation permeates this book. If you've read the authors that Mr Hunt bashes you'll find that he over and over again slants and alters the intent of what the author was saying. Unless you read the other authors you won't notice the slant or alterations. The alterations make the teaching of the authors seem evil, when they are not. Readers should not take much of this work at face value, but read more about the church leader that is being attacked. This way the reader can form their own unbiased opinion. Dave Hunt obviously doesn't like many things in the Christian church today, which is fine. He is entitled to like and dislike whatever he chooses. But he is trying to pass off his own opinions as the word of the Lord. Dave Hunt fails to see that the presence of a counterfeit proves that there is also a real, and that the real thing has value. If what we are seeing happen in Toronto, Brownsville, at the Benny Hinn crusades is a counterfeit than what does the real work of the Lord look like? Dr Mark Virkler has written a response to this book, which is available on amazon.com, in which he responds with over 1000 verses of scripture that support what Hunt condemns. In it are the responses to Dave Hunt's work. there is also a small section in Virkler's book, "Communion with God". if you read this book, read Virkler's as well. it is the only way to get both sides of the story. Anybody can throw accusations out but that doesn't make those accuations true. There are many people who hate Americans, does that make their accusations correct? A person needs to look at both sides of the story to come out with an accurate and unbiased opinion. Reading this book does not give the reader the full information that people need to view what is happening in the body of Christ today. Where in the bible does it make it ok for Christians to ruthlessly attack those who do things a little differently? The bible does tell Christians to go to those they have a problem with and discuss the matter privately, not to go and write and publish a book where they attack them. I was never able to get a hold of Mr Hunt to express my thoughts, which is unfortunate. This book has the ability to bring tremendous destruction to the body of Christ. There is so much backbiting and bashing in the church today, and we wonder why 7000 American church's close every year. Books like these help to kill the church. I wish Dave Hunt the absolute best for his life, family and ministry and God's blessing on his life but believe that this book is wrong. I do wonder one thing: Dave Hunt wrote another book, the God Makers (a book about mormonism which is available on amazon.com), with Ed Decker. Ed Decker is an associate pastor at a church that lives out everything that Hunt condemns in this book. it does make me wonder? It is very disturbing the word, "discernment" is used in the book's title. Discernment is the power to see what isn't evident. There is no discernment in most of this book. It's just harsh judgment and labelling of people that the author has made no effort to understand. It's upsetting that people will read this book and come to conclusions based on what this book says. Dave Hunt has a very extensive bibliography in this book. However when I intestigated how he got his information I was shocked. In one example Hunt quotes John and Paula Sandford. Hunt quotes three sentences. I recognized the quotes he was using and went back to the Sandford's book. Dave Hunt hand picked three sentences, from three different paragraphs on a 350 word page to support his views, deliberately ignoring the explanations to these sentences. This book is titled "discernment in the last days", yet the author has chosen to provide half facts. He presents one side of an argument and pays no attention to the other side. This book is full of other examples like this that are deliberate attempts to create truths. How is ignoring facts discernment? This book makes me crazy because this is a man who is basically lying about what others say. It's one thing to have different beliefs and to express them, but it's another to blatantely mislead people from what certain authors really say. To have an accurate conclusion, you must have all the facts (from both sides) and the truth about what is going on. This book does not produce those chactersitics. This is the point of view of one man and his beliefs.
