Summary: Is there anything that can compare?
Review: I know of no book that can even compare to the scope and depth of this one, therefore I cannot give it anything but 5 stars. It is a thorough reference of the history and melodies of the cantillation, including a CD and musical notation of all cantillations used for public reading. It is appropriate for all levels of knowledge--from a beginner to an experienced reader.
The grammar he presents is not quite up-to-date and there are minor problems with the phonetic notation he gives certain letters and vowels. However, all in all it is quite excellent.

Summary: Great- First time I can make sense of the Ta-amim!
Review: It is a great book that finally shows that the cantilation is not arbitrary, how it contributes to the sense of the text, how
it works with grammar. Instead of teaching the Taamim as
a dogma, it actually shows how one can understand a text and
put the Taamim himself. It also reveals the grammar of the texts.
I bought four more for my friends.

Summary: a veritable encyclopedia of "trop"
Review: Joshua Jacobsen has authored what can only be described as a monumental and encyclopedic work on this subject. It is by far the most complete tome ever printed in the English language on Torah cantillation, and possibly in any language. No student of Ta'amei HaMikra should be without it--it's worth the purchase price for the bibliography alone! As a major bonus, the sections on dikduk (Hebrew grammar) and pronunciation are amazingly complete and easy to understand. I found answers here to nagging questions that I had, for example the dispute over "kodashim" versus "kadashim", and why a sh'va following a conjunctive shuruk is silent (answer: it's a "sh'va meracheif"). I believe that this massive (965 pages) work is destined to become the standard reference for courses taught in biblical cantillation. If you teach bar/bat mitzva students, are just interested in the subject, or have any need for a comprehensive reference book on Ta'amei HaMikra, do not hesitate to acquire this one.
