Summary: If you want more....
Review: If you have felt that Bible studies just haven't gone deep enough for you, or maybe you're tired of hearing the same old things in women's studies, this book is for you. Many women in our church are going through the workbook version of this book and all agree that there is power and truth in this study. It will take you deep into the Word...mostly old testament, especially Isaiah, but really all through the Scriptures. God has really blessed Beth with insights and the ability to pull powerful and life-changing truths from His word. The title, Breaking Free, Making Liberty in Christ a Reality, is right on, and what is inside does not disappoint. Again, I have experience with the workbook (which I don't see listed here)but the hardcover covers the same topics. There is a video series that goes with the workbooks, but much could be learned through the book even without the video. It's wonderful for group studies. Encourage your church to purchase the video series to use in small groups. You will not be unchanged!

Summary: Set the Captive Free
Review: This book is the best I have read on dealing with strongholds and the conduct of spiritual warfare. It is essentially an inspired exposition of the first four verses in Isaiah 61, which I view as Christ's job description, and a description of the wonderful benefits God wants Christians to enjoy. While pretty much written from a "chick" perspective, its lessons are gender neutral. Moore's personalization of the Isaiah scripture in prayer form at the book's conclusion is worth the price of the book alone! Anyone who seriously reads this book will be blessed with a greater understanding of the Savior's love and ability and desire to set the captives free.

Summary: He came to set the captives FREE!
Review: This book is the second Beth Moore work I have read. Once again, I was pleased. Moore here shares a personal journey of unfastening the shackles of the past and becoming all one can be in Christ. She begins with an overview of her vision of breaking free, and then proceeds to share both benefits and obstacles to a life of freedom in Jesus.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to overcome sin associated with a troubled past. Moore allows herself to be transparent here, describing candidly her own severe trials and spiritual triumphs. Still, those persons who don't have deep emotional scars can benefit from this volume.

Beth Moore is one of most outstanding teachers and devotional writers of our time. This title illustrates that truth once again. Get it and see for yourself!

Summary: Breaking Free leads to greater Intimacy with Him
Review: This book was recommended to me by a friend. I am thankful for all of the editorial and spotlight reviews. Although I have not yet read the book, most of the reviews have confirmed why I should read it. I, however, want to comment on the "fear of God" verses "perfected in love" comment in an earlier review. I believe that there are two fears of God: one which is a holy fear and demanded of a holy God and one which is based in our humanness, and not of God. The "holy fear" is one based out of reverance and love for a God who is completely blameless. Moses, for example, had a holy fear. Holy fear is made perfect in His love because of the intimacy he developed in his relationship with God. The further we grow in our relationship with Him, the more we love and fear Him. The "human fear" is based on hiding and the bondage we succumb to in this human world. When we are held captive and know "of" God, but don't really, deeply, know His heart with the intimacy He desires, we are afraid of Him and run/hide, similarly to Adam and Eve at the first sin and similarly to the Israelites after many sins in the Wilderness. When the Holy God made His presence known in the Wilderness, Moses stayed to experience His wonder, yet the Israelites ran because they were afraid.

As we break free of areas that hold us captive in our lives, areas that we may not even know hold us so tight, we grow in our intimacy with God. "Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you" is a promise that He will never let us down on. But we also have to have a Holy fear of Him. I look forward, with anticipation, to read this book because I desire to hear His heart and "die" more to myself. In Psalm 27, David speaks of God calling to Him: "My heart has heard you say, 'Come and talk with me.' And my heart eagerly responds, 'Lord, I am coming!'" I look forward to breaking free, no matter the cost. It doesn't compare to what He did for us on the cross.
