Rating: Summary: A nice reproduction of the original King James Bible! Review: Hendrickson is perhaps one of the few remaining American publishers to offer a facsimile edition of the authorized original 1611 King James Bible. I got this Bible as a gift from an ole friend. The King James translation remains one of the most poetic and beautiful translations of the Bible in my humble opinion. This translation includes the Apocryphal writings, though not interspersed with the Old Testament as with the Roman Catholic canon. With original KJV, you should expect archaic English text and peculiar spelling conventions peculiar to the 17th century. Some English idioms make the translation tedious at times. For example, in Ruth 2:3, "Her hap was to..." really means "She happened to." The bonded leather is very beautiful. I've long been a King James man, though my favorite translation is the NKJV for its modern clarity and coupled with the poetic ring of the King James. I'm still eagerly awaiting my first Geneva Bible, which is the Bible of my Puritan forefathers.

Rating: Summary: hendrickson 1611 reprint Review: I was at first a little "skeptical" about the quality of this, but after receiving it I was quite impressed. The opening essay on english translations is quite informative. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in studying the developement of the english Bible. The only thing I was a little disappointed with was the printing in some places was either too dark, or too light. Even with this it is very legible and I would purchase it again (knowing this). As far as being faithful to the original. The cover markings are not and the roman typface are not correct with respect to be faithful to the first printings of the original 1611 (original would be gothic). The leather cover is really nice though. In order for it to be "a little more" faithful it would need to be the hardcover version with the leather cover (and even the hendrickson version of this one is bonded leather). Still this is a very good buy at the price considering if you want an exact reprint the cheapest I have seen them for is $250.00 dollars.

Rating: Summary: Treasure in Literary, Historical and Spiritual Terms Review: If there was a higher score I would give it. No English document in history has had an impact comparable to this work in any of three key areas; Literature, History, or Spiritual. Yet I have the privilege - and others like me - to hold in my hands a copy of one of the earliest issues of this great book. I don't have to go to a University Library or some ancient Monastery and gaze at it through glass. Nor do I have to mortgage my home for the purchase price, though even that would undervalue this book.
It wants a better poet than me to find language for the value of this document. It probably requires someone who has risked his or her life to own a Bible to begin to comprehend its true worth.
Of special interest to historians as well as theologians is the lengthy and detailed section on English Translations that predate the 1611 King James Bible. The Calendars are also a fascinating resource.
With clear, easy-reading type (very much a surprise to me) yet the authentic spelling, sentence structure, organization and footnotes, this volume makes all that wealth readily accessible. I don't use my copy as much as other Bibles I own, for the Old English makes for a challenging read. Yet if I was forced to choose one Bible only, the pull of this one would be intense.
A treasure by any measure I can evaluate it against.
Rating: Summary: What hath GOD wrought!!! Review: In the opinion of many, there are two Fountainheads from which the beauty of the English Tongue flows forth: The Writings of Shakespeare and the Authorised King James Bible. Indeed, many a person's wits are tried in a popular game in which one must discern whether a particular passage of prose/poetry is a work of the Bard, or a work of GOD. "Shakespeare, or the Bible?" Rare is the occasion in which Shakespeare can be called Biblical, but of all versions, before it and after, ancient and modern, only one Version can wholly claim the glory of being described as "Shakespearean" : The 1611 Authorized Version. Here is a rare chance to obtain a piece of history, the editio princeps of King James' version, wrought at the height of England's Elizabethan grandeur, when she was poised to conquere the world, at her right hand the Sword of the Lord, the Word of God. Buy it, ere it be too late, and thou be left gnashing thy teeth...
Rating: Summary: Just keep telling yourself it's the inside that counts Review: It's the Bible, and the only English version of the Bible that's TRUE to some of the oldest, trust translations in our tongue. The facsimile is absolutely gorgeous, and it feels like you're taking a step back in time every time you open the covers. However, the actual outside of the Bible is what gets to me. The front cover is stamped with HUGE 48-point font HOLY BIBLE 1611 EDITION etcetera... This doesn't really match with the historical feel of what's inside. But overall this is my new favorite Bible and something I'm sure people at my church will love to see (since finding Bibles with the Apocrypha is quite difficult but they are the standard in the Episcopal Church).
Rating: Summary: Beautiful reproduction of the original King James Version Review: Students of the many Bible translations on the market be aware: this is a must have. (By the way, I never knew that it had an almanac in it!) The old English spelling of the words takes some getting used to, and it does not have nearly the number of cross references that today's KJV Bibles have. That aside, it is a beautifully printed reproduction of the Bible. It has not only been ranked with Shakespeare's works as the greatest masterpiece of literature in the English language, but also has been the standard version of the Bible most Christians have read for four hundred years. In a way, it is sad to see a lot people give up reading the KJV because of the archaic language many claim is a stumbling block to reading the Scriptures. But, as translations of the Bible come on the market (nowadays, there seems to be a new one every year or two), the King James Version is still the standard. I have never given up on a word or phrase that is confusing or hard to understand. It just makes me dig deeper to find the meaning of the passage. Besides, many of the Bible reference books on the market (Strongs Concordance, Vine's Dictionary of New Testament Words, etc.) are published to help those who are willing understand the KJV better. There is, in my opinion, no reason to put the KJV down. Own a piece of Christian history...buy one today!
Rating: Summary: well worth the price, a must have for KJV fans! Review: This is an excellent copy of the KJV bible. I have another hardbound bible from this publisher that has taken a 9yr beating and has held up well. By the looks of this one, I would expect the same. What makes this edition so appealing is that it contains everything that the original 1611 version had. The dedication, the full intro to the reader, an almanac, morning and evening prayer readings for the entire year, schedule of lessons, and the Apocrypha. It retains the subject headings, chapter intros, references, and alternate hebrew and greek translations of the original translators. It even has the original artwork. the only difference is that the main text is a modern type face, which I consider a plus, otherwise it would be almost unreadable( it does retain the original spellings). The hardbound version is supplied with a ribbon marker. Highly recommended.
