Rating: Summary: Careful and rigerous verse by verse exegesis Review: There are a lot of commentaries available on Romans, but Moo's contribution to the NICNT series is the most detailed work on the text of Romans that I have found. The exegesis is thorough and careful. Moo presents all of the most plausible interpretations of a text and then gives his own view along with a thorough explanation. The most satisfying attribute of the commentary is its readability. The main body of the text is so clear and flows so well that even one who is less familiar with Greek and/or modern critical discussions can enjoy smooth and coherent commentary by simply avoiding a large portion of the footnotes. Those in need of scholarly discussion and Greek helps will not be disappointed! Another great plus is that Moo interacts extensively in the footnotes with Sanders and Dunn regarding the "New Perspective on Paul". My only criticism is that the context in Moo's commentary does not flow as well as in the work of Wright, Schreiner and Talbert. Even Dunn's detailed work flows better (if one reads the "Explanation" sections at the end of each section of detailed exegesis). HOWEVER, this massive work by Douglas Moo is indispensible for serious study of Romans and is surely one of the finest commentaries ever written.
Rating: Summary: An EXCELLENT book for the seriously inclined! Review: This book is a GREAT commentary on Romans. It's long, but well worth the effort if you stick with it!
Rating: Summary: not the Moo Romans to get Review: This is the wrong "Romans" by Moo to get. Get his other work on Romans. As D. A. Carson (who worked with Moo on 1992's "An Introduction to the New Testament") wrote: "Only the most poorly trained pastor will prefer Moo's NIV Application commentary on Romans... to his NIC volume" (p.72, "New Testament Commentary Survey").
