Rating: Summary: one of the best Review: This book, and the other two in the trilogy, were some of the best books I've read. I couldn't stop reading them and was actually sad when I had to turn the last page, knowing my time with them was up.
Rating: Summary: I love this series!!! Review: Ancient Rome is a mirror image of modern day USA. Extremely memorable characters... exciting plot lines.... accurate historical information. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! Read all 3 books. I pray every day that Ms. Rivers will write more about these folks!
Rating: Summary: This series is packed w/ suspense, romance & inspiration! Review: Francine Rivers has expertly paralled the lives-- challenges, joys and sorrows of these first- century characters to those of today's world. The heroine, Hadassah, is a woman whose faith provides her with grace and courage which is timeless...her strength of character would be respected and admired in any time, or setting. This heroine is truly an inspiration to all mankind, regardless of race or religious background. This series is my first Rivers' read, but will definitely not be my last! I couldn't wait to finish this series, which was woven together so beautifully that I didn't want the stories to end!
Rating: Summary: Ancient Rome reminds me of modern America Review: I'm new to Christian fiction. I thought this was a fabulous, well-written story. Hadassah was alittle too syrupy sweet, but other than that, fairly believable. Julia, on the other hand, was an interesting case study. It was interesting to see her moral downward spiral which started off as general disregard for her parents' authority, to vanity of her beauty, to desire to titilate her senses at the arenas. Can't wait to read "An Echo in the Darkness"
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read!!! Review: This is a absolutly wonderful book!! Rivers does an excellent job! It seems as thought she was actually there and saw the whole thing!! I cant wait to read the next book and the next also!! This is a book ranking up with Frank Perreti's This present darkness and Robert Jordans Wheel of time series!!
Rating: Summary: Easily, one of the best books I've ever read. Review: I never knew Christian fiction could be so engrossing. This book made me cry with joy and shudder with horror. The lives of the first century Christians must have been so hard, and yet what joy to have actually known someone (John) who walked with Jesus.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: This book just grabbed at my attention and tied me down by the heart strings! There was no way I could have stopped reading it. I was so torn between Hadassah and Marcus's strained relationship. I was angry with Marcus becuase he wouldn't follow his heart's instincts in the beginning of the novel. I sympathized with Hadassah when she restrained herself from taking pleasure in Marcus's affections. As a Christian, I enjoyed this novel immensely, as well as it's two sequels. Atretes also intrigued me with his iron will and vengeful hatred of the Romans. This book will keep you reading for hours and you won't be able to wait to read "Echo in the Darkness" and "Sure as the Dawn"!
Rating: Summary: This is by far my favorite book, Christian or otherwise Review: Yeah yeah, I'm just another person who read this book. But I have to tell you something, books like these don't come along all that often. If I were able to, this book would be given a twenty, not a mere ten. It's that good; really!
Here is a brief summary for those who don't believe me. It's about a young jewish girl caught up in the Roman invasion of Jerusalem. Unfairly branded a zealot, put into slavery and marched back to Rome to be a participant in the bloody Roman games, she is saved at the last moment and sold as a slave to a high powered roman family. It is here where she matures, the handmaid of a high-strung, self centered brat named Julia, and the object of desire for Julia's older brother, the handsome Marcus. Yet through all her trials and troubles, her faith in her God remains intact, and steadily grows as she does. The climax is reached at the very end, and is so stunning and unexpected it will propel you to the bookstore for the next book in the series, "Echo in the Darkness."
The book itself is not about religion, per se; if you are not a Christian, you will enjoy this book just as much as a person who is. This book is mainly about the triumph of the human spirit, and the devotion, in the face of incredible danger and hatred, of a simple girl who never would have harmed a soul. It's a must read, which is simply why I gave it a (meager, in my opinion) ten.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books that I have ever read. Review: Francine Rivers manages to totally capture the reader with her knowledge of history and Biblical atmosphere. The story makes one feel as if they are walking along the streets of Rome and Jerusalem, intermingling with the people of that time. The trilogy, The Mark of the Lion, is one of my favorite collections and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in reading about Biblical times
Rating: Summary: Not your common read... Review: A Voice in the Wind was a true "cannot put down" for me. In fact I found this book so engrossing that I quickly obtained the other two books in the series. I just could not wait to find out what happened to Hadassah and Marcus.
This Christian story of a Jewish girl and her prayers for the family she serves is unusual. It does not preach religion, but demonstrates the effects of loving Jesus has on a person. Hadassah serves her masters with devotion and becomes a valued member of their staff.
The love story that evolves is one of true passion. Passion that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat. These two love each other. Marcus's love for his family (especially his sister) makes him a great leading man. Hadassah's respect for his family and her own beliefs makes her the perfect heroine.
While the standards set by this young woman may be ones that would seem to make this an ideal book for young romantics, the society of early Rome mirrors our world today. Therefore, I recommend that it be set aside for upper high school students and adults. Open homosexuality and other suggested sexual activities may not be appropriate for some younger teens
