Understanding The Bible

Summary: Alright from the secular aspect...
Review: We are using this book in my introduction to Bible class at University. It is alright from the secular aspect, but it tends refer to theory as fact. For example, the documentary hypothesis is relied on heavily by the author, although it has pretty much been abandoned even by scholars. It has a lot of useful information but it cannot be taken too seriously by a believer as it at large attempts to discredit the Bible.

Review: We used this book in our "Understanding the Bible" course and I just could not believe what I was reading in this book.

Harris is apparently determined to discredit everything in the Bible that he can. Throughout the book, he would explain some stuff then say, "oh, by the way, 'recent scholarship' has shown that most of the stuff here is false/inaccurate/biased."

And I just got so tired of it. I hate the fact that the author does not once admit his bias. (He is obviously biased against believing anything in the Bible.) I agree with another reviewer that this sort of "liberal" book on the Bible can be dangerous to a new or uneducated believer. But it can be an interesting to those who wonder what an unbelieving mind can come up with.

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:14)
