Rating: Summary: A unique and challenging translation Review: If you like to compare translations, you'll notice that this one is considerably different from the mainstream "literal" translations and also the simplistic paraphrases. Apart from the "Jewishness," Stern uses intelligent language, complex sentence structure and develops the thought in the passage. Does he do it well? I think so, but you'll have to decide yourself. Does "faith" include the ideas of unswerving trust and faithfulness (as Stern would lead you) or is it more along the Protestant lines of a "decision" for Christ, a one-time act? Should "under law" be read as "legalism?" Is the cross a stake? Read Stern's introduction- it will help. On the negative side, the print is too small and light, the Jewish words should be given phonetically and defined on the bottom of the page, or at least the English equivalent footnoted on the same page. It would make the translation more usable. I found his work intellectually satisfying. Since it was a one-man translation, Stern had a lot of freedom, the kind you don't see in a committee work.
Rating: Summary: Great easy-to-read English translation Review: This translation is both easy to read and user-friendly. Especially referring to the Tanach, this is a modern language paraphrase (and several revisions) of the old JPS version, complete with clearly marked parashat (including the subdivisions within a parsha) and haftarah readings. This is the best translation of Tanach I have ever owned. Whether you like Dr. Stern's JNT added to this translation or not, I recommend you to get a copy of this, regardless of your convictions.
Rating: Summary: "The Complete Jewish Bible" is Completely Misnamed! Review: The soi-disant "Complete Jewish Bible" is, in fact, a _Christian_ bible on which someone's done a cut-and-paste job, largely on the Nouveau Testament, replacing "Jesus" with "Yeshua", "Matthew" with "Mattityahu", etc.It has nothing, nil, nada, zip, zilch, to do with Judaism. It's a tool for so-called "Messianic Jews" to push their agenda.
Rating: Summary: Most recent rendition of Scriptures from a Jewish viewpoint Review: According to the president of the International Society of Bible Collectors, in a book review appearing in the Jan-March 1999 issue of Bible Collectors' World, the Old Testament portion of David Stern's COMPLETE JEWISH BIBLE contains a paraphrase of the Jewish Publication Society's Tanakh, not a reprint of it verbatim.
Rating: Summary: Scholarly and easy to read Review: Dr. Stern restores the Jewishness of the Brit Hadashah (New Testament) in a scholarly and readable way. Now he combines that with a compatible version of the Tanakh in one volume. As a gentile believer in Y'shua the Messiah, I was extremely pleased to see this book published. By reading it, I feel more in touch with the faith of the early Christians, who were Jewish! I do most of my devotional reading, but not study, using this version. This first printing does contain minor typesetting errors, but the reading itself, especially of passages of poetry, is beautiful.
Rating: Summary: Good Review: Stern's "Jewish NT" is good for providing a Messianic commentary to the B'rit Chadasha, but it should not be regarded as an authoritative translation, since it is the work of only one translator. The "Jewish OT" portion of the "Complete Jewish Bible" is actually a reprint of the JPS public domain Tenach and is not the result of Dr. Stern's tranlation.
Rating: Summary: Best Translation Available!! Review: I feel, as a believer in the Jewish Messiah, that Dr Stern's amount of thought and care placed into this translation makes it the best available to date. Too often, we Goyim (Gentiles) feel that we have the right to ignore our Messianic Jewish friends and "create our own tree" of interpretations and "truths". If one takes the time to ponder Paul's words as a Jewish cohen and realize that we are to be a branch of that tree, Oh! How much greater the reward!!
Rating: Summary: THis is Review: David Stern does a wonderful job of making the New Covenant come alive. He shows us the actual writings of the new testament writers and their literal writings from the Hebrew. Everyone should add this book to their library.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME!!!!! Review: I liked the way that this translation handles BOTH the Tanakh and the Brit hadasha (New Testament). It is Awesome! I recomend it for all who yearn to know the truth about the Messiah!(Also I recomend the hard cover - as you'll be reading it A LOT!!!)
Rating: Summary: I am absolutely LOVING this Bible. Review: This is a must for anybody who is looking to uncover the Hebrew roots of their faith. It gives the reader an awareness of the jewishness of the Messiah and an understanding of the Bible like never before. I would recommend this to Messianic Jewish Believers, as well as all Christians. For people trying to witness to their Jewish friends, this would be an excellent gift to give to them. May you all be blessed by this wonderful gift. Shalom.
