Greeley has finally written a book that pretty well says it all, with the exception of one sentence. Hans Kung contrary to Fr.Greeley's opinion is "not" a celebrity theologian. Infact its uncanny how many of Fr.Greeley's observations resemble what Hans Kung has already written about in previous books, going back as far as the 80's.

Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: Romantic defense of Catholicism revisited Review: Greeley's analysis of the reasons for the church's loss of authority after Vatican II is totally believable, but that is not news. What is news is that Greeley bases his belief that the Catholic church and faith will survive entirely on what early 19th-Century Europeans called a Romantic defense of religion -- essentially invented by people like Chateaubriand, it held that religion would last because it was "beautiful." Because it filled a need and no amount of scientific evidence against its dogmas or practices would make any difference. This is about what I would expect from Greeley -- an abandonment of reason and logic in favor of sentimentality. Buy it if you wish, I don't wish.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Excellent! Review: If it wasn't for Fr. Greeley, I don't know if I would have remained Catholic. His writing is excellent, his points well founded, and he doesn't shy away from the truth about the many problems within the Church. He is courageous and expresses himself well (quite unlike the people who wrote the other reviews regarding this book). I can't recommend Fr. Greeley highly enough.
