Summary: An excellent study aid.
Review: A great reference and study edition of the New American Bible version. Jam-packed full of footnotes, articles and an exhaustive Study Guide.

Summary: On Second Thought
Review: After a more thorough review, I realize now that I gave this edition of the New American bible a rating which was too high. Really it should get 2 stars, perhaps 3 at best. A much better edition of the New American Bible would be the St. Joseph's Edition, Classic edition. The St. Joseph's Edition and the Catholic Study Bible have the same introductions and notes, except that the additional materials in the St. Joseph's Edition are better. The Catholic Study Bible's reading guides and the guide to the lectionary reflect current trends among some popular theologians, but do not do much to illuminate the Church's teachings. The material in these reading guides one can get out of a decent introduction to the Bible. In addition to the good introductions and decent notes of the New American Bible, the St. Joseph's Edition provides a bible dictionary, a biblical/doctrinal index with citations to key texts supporting Catholic doctrine, and helpful illustrations and maps. The St. Joseph's Edition also contains the text of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation from Vatican II and a helpful guide to reading the Bible. I would say that the St. Joseph's Edition is, for the money, a much better buy and a safer guide to reading the Bible from an orthodox Catholic perspective.

Summary: Catholic Study Bible
Review: An indispensable Bible. Excellent translation that fits most lectionaries in US churches. Footnotes are especially helpful and the study guide information is relevant too. Easy to use whether studying Hebrew scriptures or Second Testament.

Summary: Very Offensive!
Review: As a strict & passionate, but long-illeterite Christian, I have never before read the book on which my religion is founded. Finding this book at a tag sale at my local church, I decided to give it a try. I'm not sure if this Bible is the same Bible that all those priests and stuff keep talking about, but I'm sure that it's not! THIS Bible is filled with sex and violence... not the good Christian values that I have come to expect from the writings of my own religion! This is an outrage, and I demand that this Bible be taken off the market in favor of the REAL Bible!

P.S. If anyone knows where I can find a WHOLESOME Bible, please tell me. I've looked through the ones at my church and it appears that they're using the OFFENSIVE Bible, and not the REAL Bible! (perhaps they can't find the real one)

Summary: The rating is for the study guide part of it
Review: As another reviewer said, the Bible itself needs no rating. However, I am disappointed with the study guide as it seems to reduce study of the Bible to a dry history lesson. This is a living book and I was expecting to see more down to earth, practical application of God's word in today's world. The lack of a doctrinal index IS a serious omission, in my opinion. Still, I think it's a nice book to have because it gives the historical context of each of the Bible books. In some places, it also mentions archaeological support for the existence of people and places. Although I gave the book a rating of 3 stars, I think it's worth having and can enhance the spiritual growth of serious Catholics

Summary: Best of all Study Bibles Ever!
Review: I am an Orthodox Roman Catholic who has searched and searched for a good study bible that was in-line with the teaching of the church. In this study Bible, I found what I had been looking for for so long! It has over 500 pages of reading guides one every single book that help the reader understand how, when and why each book was written as well as the setting of the time when each book was written. It also comes with the footnotes classic of all New American Bibles as well as colorful maps showing such events as Moses' exodus and Paul's journeys. There are also the readings used in the daily and Sunday masses. This Study Bible shows how the scriptures relate to the teaching in the Catechism of the church. Finally a good Study Bible for us real Catholics!!

Summary: To counteract the first review: 1 star
Review: I don't think that the first dude who reviewed the book has considered the character of the supposed co-author (God). That is, I find that the bible presents a picture of a god who I can't believe in. As I was unable to suspend my disbelief, the story fell apart under the weight of the ages.

As another reviewer commented, there's no point in reviewing the bible. I would recommend that everybody read it, depsite the fact that it was possibly the most boring and pointless works of literature ever. But I have reviewed the bible because reviewer #1 did. No amount of commentary, indices, etc can make it interesting.

Summary: I Much Prefer the Douay-Rheims Version
Review: I find this translation much less telling and engaging than the DRV and, more often than not--despite all of the NAB study Bible helps--it remains on my bookshelf while the DRV remains open in my hands, offering a wealth of insight and an anchor to Catholic doctrine. From time to time I will read the NAB, but invariably I return quickly and relievedly to the DRV.

Frankly, some of the NAB commentary I find less than inspiring or encouraging. The last revision of the Psalms might have been the last straw for me.

I pray the Liturgy of the Hours from the DRV, too. The DRV has given me the impetus to purchase St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate and to relish Sacred Scripture in the language of the Church.

Summary: Good Enough to Buy Twice
Review: I first purchased the Catholic Study Bible as a text requirement for a Pauline Doctrine course when studying for my Master's of Theology. Since then, this book has become my bible of choice, accompanying me on my daily journey of faith. While I understand that the Revised Standard Version may sometimes contain a truer nuance of the ancient texts, the Catholic Church in America uses the NAB version in liturgy, so it's worth pursuing at home. I misplaced my beloved bible about a month ago, and have decided to buy the same version again!
