Summary: For the commentary on Gal 5:4
Review: I pray people actually read this book before commenting negatively on it. If they did, they would know that neither the Roman Catholic Church, nor Dr. Hahn teaches that we are "saved" or "justified" by the law in any sense of the word. The very point of this book is that Justification IS DIVINE SONSHIP. When we are baptized, and living in God's sanctifying grace, we are not in a court of law. Rather, we become divine children of OUR FATHER! Read the book before making comments such as this. If you have read the book, I suggest you read it again for a better understanding. If you are looking for more on Catholic soteriology, try Sungenis' "Not By Faith Alone", of which Dr. Hahn wrote the foreword.

BTW, Gal 5:4 does not contradict Catholic soteriology. "Justification has been merited for us by the Passion of Christ who offered himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God, and whose blood has become the instrument of atonement for the sins of all men. Justification is conferred in Baptism, the sacrament of faith. It conforms us to the righteousness of God, who makes us inwardly just by the power of his mercy" (CCC, #1992). Also, see Rom 3:21-26. Read the Catechism if you have doubts as to what Catholics believe. However, it is an error to believe Catholics espouse a Justification by the Law.

Summary: Please Read Galatians 5:4
Review: In Galatians 5:4, Paul writes: "You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace" (NIV). This is a warning to all professing Christians on what can happen when someone falls under the bondage of the law again (i.e., the soteriology of the Roman Catholic Church). The Roman church insists that in order for people to be saved they must cooperate with God's grace (i.e., do good works) to inherit eternal life. However, the Bible states emphatically the opposite: read Romans 3:20; Galatians 3:10-12; Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 3:9; and Titus 3:5. Protestants and Romanists will never be able to reconcile their differences unless the latter repents and accepts the Good News presented in Scripture. It is either Scripture or Romish tradition - which will you choose?

Summary: The true Church
Review: Most of us from eastern religion wanting to convert to the western religion. I have spent a great deal of time researching western religion and learning how it all began. The catholic church has its beginings in Christ Jesus during the Roman empire. The Catholic Church has had its ups and downs as the history will have it. However, it still remains the beginning of all churches. This book will teach those wanting to chose religion why they should consider the catholic church and the practicing catholics why they should remain faithful

Summary: Come back to the Catholic Faith!
Review: The Scriptures; the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; the real presence in the Eucharist; Mary; Purgatory; justification; the nature of baptism; priests. These are all subjects of many a civilized discussion (or heated dispute!) with our protestant brothers and sisters.

The assembled essays in this book explain these and other issues in very clear and readable language. They serve well in explaining the Biblical and historical basis behind these issues.

For the Catholic who wants to understand the faith better, whether it be for personal growth or to help defend the teachings against those who would criticize them, this book is for you.

For the protestant who is willing to let the Catholic Church explain the Catholic Church, this book is for you too.

A pretty easy read. Well worth your time!

Summary: Good Apologetic Book for New Catholics
Review: This book collects a series of essays on Catholic doctrines that are likely to come up in discussions with Protestants. Each essay is by notable Catholic convert or Theologian and is related to particular Catholic doctrine. These essays are bookended by introductory and concluding essay by Scottt Hahn. Each essays presents a good defense of the doctrine involved and makes great use of scripture and the arguments based on the family of God. The Essays on Baptism, Purgatory and especially the one one Mary which uses solid scriptural exegeis was particularly convincing. It literally removed any reservations I had about Mary's role in Salvation History. There is is good essay in the beginning of the book which presents a good way to study the Bible and read its historical narrative in under three months. A wealth of useful information.

Summary: Canadian reviewer missed the boat - Share this far and wide
Review: Unfortunately, our Canadian rewiewing friend did not appear to read the chapter on justification (or if he did, he failed to absorb its message). If he had, he would have learned that he is misinterpreting the passages he cites as opposing Catholic teaching because he is ignoring the all-important *CONTEXT*. Namely, that Paul was writing to Judaizers who thought they could save themselves through doing the "works of the [Mosaic] Law" apart from Christ. Paul is NOT speaking about works done in and through the grace of Christ (see 1 Cor.15:10), which are very much necessary if we hope to receive our heavenly reward (see Gal.6:8-10, Rom.2:6-11 or Matt 25).
Ironically, our Canadian friend has unwittingly helped to prove the authors' goals in writing this book: 1)we need to work hard to educate Catholics about their own faith, many of whom sadly perpetuate misunderstandings such as this one, and, 2)non-Catholics need to hear the fullness of historic Christianity and receive God's sacraments in the one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. This book should be spread far & wide for both purposes. I have heard personal testimonies of how this book has helped bring ex-Catholics back to the fold. It is a treasure!
