Summary: September 11, 2001 - The Catholic Position on Just War
Review: Read the Catechism! You will find a wealth of thought provoking questions and guidance on the all of life's issues. After the attacks of September 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I went to the Catechism for guidance on the morality of the possible responses. The Catechism lays out a very clear path for us - not necessarily the answers because every situation is different - but what questions to ask and when. When if ever is it morally justified to kill another human being? Can we kill in self-defense? Can we hate those who want to kill us? Can a nation morally wage war? Under what circumstances? When are the means of warfare immoral - even if the cause is just? Do citizens have the responsibility to protest against a war? Do citizens have a responsibility to serve in the military? The Catechism tells us of our responsibility to work for peace and justice. How we have a moral responsibility to avoid war by eliminating the root causes of most wars. What moral responsibilities we have when our efforts at avoiding war fail. When a nation is justified and even required to use force to defend its citizens. The moral responsibility we have to safeguard non-combatants, prisoners and the wounded. An excellent map and compass for us to navigate all of life's issues.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK
Review: I bought this particular version of the catechism and returned it to the book store two days later. The book is not decently made and the pages start coming off of the binding as soon as you start looking through the book. In trying to read one of the first chapters, the pages just kept falling out. I also know two other people that this happened to with this version of the catechism.

Buy any other version, but not this one.

Summary: Wonderful if you understand what it's for.
Review: The Catechism is a wonderful book, if it's used for the reason it was published. This is not an encyclopedia. This is not an apologetics Book. This is not a devotional book. The Catechism is a straight-forward presentation of what the church believes. One of the main reasons for it is so that people can use it as a foundation to make other smaller 'catechism.' (Such as how the Baltimore Catechism was based on the Catechism of the Council of Trent).

so, I say, buy it, read it, love it. If you are having trouble with a particular issue, pray about it and find books that talk about that subject in depth.

Summary: a solid book for every Christian to have
Review: This is a wonderful, solid Christian book for every Christian, especially non-Catholic Christians. Its a depiction of the amazing works of the Holy Spirit in the Church since Jesus founded it on Peter. It's the history of the christian Church, to which All of world's Christians belonged to, for first 1500 years of Christianity.

Summary: A Dependable Resource
Review: The "Catechism of the Catholic Church" is the definitive source for anyone interested in the teachings of the Catholic Church on almost any topic on which the Church has taken an official position.

The catechism, the first in four centuries, is divided into four parts. Each part is divided into Sections, Chapters, Articles and subordinate divisions. The principles of each article are summarized in a conclusion entitled "In Brief".

The Catechism is well indexed. The footnotes provide citations to sources including the Bible, the writings of the Doctors of the Church, documents of Ecumenical Councils and other authoritative writings.

Part One- "The Profession of Faith", begins with the sources of Revelation, followed by Man's Response to God's Revelation. It concludes with a clause by clause analysis of the ancient Creed of the Church.

Part Two- "Celebration of the Christian Mystery" explains Church teachings on the liturgy and the sacraments through which God touches and nourishes the life of man.

Part Three- "Life In Christ" presents the Church's teaching on Christian morality, including a study of each of the Ten Commandments.

Part Four- "Christian Prayer" examines man's communication with God.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking the know the truths which the Catholic Church teaches. For the Catholic, it is a guide to a deeper understanding of the truths which we profess. For one investigating the Catholic Faith, the Catechism is a reliable presentation of the teachings from the highest ecclesiastical authority. Whether read in its entirety or consulted for a specific question, The Catechism of the Catholic Church deserves a place in every Catholic home as well as in the home of every seeker of truth.

Summary: A highly intellectual work on Catholicism
Review: Like many other reviewers, I found this work to be extraordinary in its breadth, depth and complexity. Although I am neither a theologian nor an expert in Catholicism, I don't believe you need to read anything else to understand exactly what Catholicism teaches. There are massive misunderstandings, among non-Catholics and Catholics alike (including priests), about what Catholicism teaches and requires. Because I have read the Catechism, I have been able to point out errors in teaching, advice and ethics offered by friends, family and even priests. Make no mistake, the Catechism is a highly complicated work that requires detailed and careful reading to understand. I would suggest that a post college reading level is necessary. The word choices in the passages on Church teaching on Judaism, other religions, ethics and the Ten Commandments were obviously pondered and debated at length by the authors. The nuances are stunning, and what was omitted is as important as what was written. The Catechism is as complex as a legal case brief and its interpretation can be extensively debated. For example, what does the phrase "through no fault of their own" mean when stating that people of other religions who do not know Jesus may still achieve salvation? I suggest you might get many different answers from priests and even among the authors. Whether a faithful Catholic or a critic, this work is essential in formulating effective intellectual arguments to defend and believe in or attack the Church's teaching. I would suggest devoting at least 25 hours reading/studying the text before doing either.

Summary: A testimony to historic Christianity
Review: This catechism is very helpful and it has plenty of scipture references to support the faith and practices of the Church. Another book I highly recommend is "Not By Faith Alone: The Biblical Evidence for the Catholic Doctrine of Justification." These two books should be a great help for Catholics to prove the Biblical truth of their faith and to help Protestants and Evangelicals see the Biblical evidence for Catholic teaching and practice.
