Summary: Transforming
Review: This book is second only to the Holy Bible in the impact it has had on my personal growth and maturity into a real disciple of Jesus Christ.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This book feeds your soul
Review: Foster expresses the integrity and grace that discipline brings to a dedicated spiritual life, sorely missing from other devotionals. This book was exactly what my thirsty soul was looking for.

Summary: A Spiritual Rebirth
Review: I have been a pastor for nearly 10 years and I have not read a book ( besides the Bible ) that has helped me in my spiritual walk like this one. Foster opened my eyes to an all new Christianity. A genuine simple Christianity.

Summary: This book will change your relationship with Christ forever.
Review: Christianity is about relationship - God meeting our fundamental need to be in personal, intimate relationship with him. I should have read this book when I was a much younger Christian. I've been following Jesus for nearly a decade, and I've enjoyed my walk so far. However, as I have approached the decade milestone, I have felt a growing dissatisfaction with my walk. I had this nagging sense that at the ten-year point, I really should know him better. After all, Jesus is supposed to be my best friend. And, I wasn't sure why. This book is more than simply a devotional. It goes beyond the 'why' of the disciplines, but gives some practical advice on 'how'. How many of us understand how to "meditate", "fast" or "pray" without simply mouthing the words from time to time? How do you practice "submission" without feeling inferior to someone or practice "solitude" without feeling lonely? The disciplines are like a farmer, preparing the soil for seed. The farmer cannot force the seed to grow, but he can provide an environment that is good for its growth - tilling the soil, providing water, fertilizer, planting seeds, removing weeds. But, only God causes the growth. Similarly, the disciplines prepare you for growth that only God can (and does) provide. The contents of this book, applied and practiced, have been revitalizing my walk in ways I hadn't thought possible. I'm learning things about this personal relationship that were completely unexpected, and tremendously enriching. I encourage you to get this book if you claim the name of Jesus and be prepared to experience a deeper, personal, life-changing experience with your loving Lord. Expect to change - for to spend time in the presence of the eternal, living God is to be changed!

Summary: Excellent work on seeking God
Review: After having read this book many many times and seeing this book lived out by the Author I can attest it is one of the greatest works ever done about following God in our chaotic world.

Not only have I had the privilege to read this work but having Dr Foster as a professor helped me to understand more his heart. This book is one you will come back to time and time again.

Review: I have read many books on spiritual growth over the years but none of them can compare to this incredible masterpiece. Truly, we need deep people of God and this book can help any Christian come to understand the Classical Disciplines in a real & relevant way. ONLY read this book if you are ready to move deeper in your relationship to the Lord!

Summary: Practical Guidance on 12 "Classic" Christian Disciplines
Review: Although a lifelong Christian and daughter of a Methodist minister, I had never explored certain of the "classic" Christian disciplines that Foster covers. This book provides a wonderful introduction to these topics, as well as new ideas for the disciplines with which I was already familiar. In particular, the friends with whom I read the book and I enjoyed the sequence in which Foster covered the various topics, and the interconnectedness of each of these chapters. Read the book and work through it with the accompanying journal/workbook. Use it as the basis for small group discussions or an organized retreat. Regardless of your background this book will help you learn and grow in your Christian beliefs, and will help you put those beliefs in action in new ways.

Summary: A great guide for parents
Review: After reading this book, it was easy for me to see how and understand why my parents disciplined me the way they did. I highly recommend this book for all parents.

Summary: Celebration of Discipline
Review: As Chrisitans we talk about how we are "learning about God" and "talking with God," but sadly, we stay stagnant in our relationship. Richard Foster explains what disciplines are necessary to grow in a closer communion with Him. His language is not loftly, but thankfully simple; it is exactly what we need to learn how to commune with God.

Summary: concrete ways for putting spiritual disciples to work
Review: While aimed at evangelicals, Foster's book will be useful to a wider audience. He draws on his own Quaker background as well as his wide reading to present a selection of spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and journaling as contemporary possibilities. Concrete and helpful, though sometimes a bit wide-eyed.
