Summary: Peer pressure.
Review: All my friends kept telling me about the bible, and how absolutely wonderful it was. So, I decided I should read the bible. It was good, but it's not really believable. Maybe it will be better in the sequel.

Summary: Great Translation -- Excellent Study Bible
Review: By Sister Faith Magdalena OSF FODC
I have many translations of the Bible but this is by far my favorite. The Revised Standard Version is closer to the original language than the more recent New Revised Standard Version. Footnotes point you to other references on similar teachings. The major difference between the Revised Standard Version and the NEW Revised Standard Version is that NRSV, in attempting to be inclusive and gender neutral, deviated from some of the original meanings of scripture. In attempting to "improve," they succeeded in "confusing" and "modifying". The goal of clarifying the authors' original gender specific meanings is still a hallmark for some future Bible Translator. In the meantime, the Revised Standard Version remains, in my opinion, the most solid translation for beginners and serious Bible Scholars alike. It's language is modern, style and syntyx flow smoothly, and it retains the spirit of poetry and inspirational prose.

Summary: Its not so bad.
Review: I bought this Bible looking for a high quality NRSV with apocrypha.
This is not meant to be your typical chain reference or topical Bible. I would not even call it a study bible in the traditional sense its more of an information Bible on current moderate scholarship in ancient biblical studies. It gives the reader deeper insight of times and places when the book was written. It is objective in its notes and tries to stay clear of doctrine. You can use it to complement a traditional study Bible but not replace it.
Sometimes it's nice to read the Bible as a casual reader instead of in-depth study of the texts.
If you want a Bible just for reading with a few highlights, cross-reference and some interesting history. I highly recommend this one.

Summary: A study Bible that does not require you already know it all
Review: I bought this Bible to go along with a study course my church was offering, even tho I already owned several Bibles and was sure I did not need another one. But I have been amazed at how much I have enjoyed reading this version.

As someone who did not already know all the historical background, the footnotes and study aids have been wonderful.

Summary: IN RETROSPECT
Review: I have previously reviewed this Bible under the title, "Excellent scholarship but is it Christian?" While I stand by my earlier comments, upon closer examination, I have to say that the General Essays at the back of this Bible are VERY helpful and include the Christian perspective I am looking for in how the New Testament interprets the Jewish Scriptures and Christian Interpretation in the Premodern Era as well as Contemporary Methods in Biblical Study. At the very least these essays articulate the Christian perspective and allow the reader to decide on how to interpret the text. I wish the annotations articulated the christian understanding of the Jewish Scriptures in more detail but the essays compensate for this somewhat. This study Bible comes from a liberal perspective and I am an evangelical christian but it does contain new insights which I have integrated into my studies. It is my firm belief that evangelicals and more liberal christians should read each others study Bibles in order to have a more balanced and integrated faith!

Summary: God's word, straight and true
Review: I love this edition because it lets you read the text unadulterated by expert opinion or particular theology. All of the tools for understanding are there. The reader brings the faith and decides what it means. I'm tired of inaccurate translations and translations that tell me how I'm supposed to feel about the text. This is the Bible, rendered accurately and speaking for itself. What more do you need?

Summary: A very good study Bible
Review: I used this Bible for Disciple 1 class. It is a well written Bible with extensive notes. As mentioned in other reviews it is not a theological treatise, but more in line with modern Biblical scholars. It leaves you to draw your own conclusions from the text.

The minor things I would improve:

Better paper for note taking and highlighting. It is high quality paper, just not great for note taking.

Tabs. Well ok, after 34 weeks of study, I don't really need them anymore, would have come in handy in weeks 1-20 though.

I am partial to words of Christ in red.

All in all an excellent choice for a study Bible.
