Rating: Summary: Excellent guide for every kitchen, and every family Review: I just found this lovely book recently, and wonder why it isn't a national bestseller. It is a perfectly sized guide, and should be in every family's kitchen. It's broken down into these sections: fruit, vegetables, nuts/seeds/legumes, meat/fish/shellfish, starchy foods, dairy foods/eggs, herbs/spices/vinegars/fats, sweet foods/drinks, vitamins/minerals, and top 20 foods. I was looking for a guide for my nephews and nieces, some of whom are very picky eaters. Because the Food Pyramid is currently undergoing a massive revision, both for children and for adults, it is the perfect time to teach children how to eat nutritionally for life -- and to correct the bad information that many children have already learned in school. I hope the author considers redoing this guide targeted at children exclusively, though I will use the directory for them as the photographs of food are exquisite. The fact that each "food" page provides a concise detail of the vitamin and mineral content of each food, as well as what bodily systems that food benefits (immune, digestive, skin/hair/eyes, heart/circulation, nervous, bones/muscles, respiratory, excretory, and reproductive), is a total delight. In the next edition, an addition of the new Food Pyramids, both for children, and for adults, should be added. Kudos and thanks to the author for such a helpful and gorgeous directory.
