Summary: The Complete Guide to Acquisitions Management
Review: Acquisitions has traditionally been given short shrift by most library schools. Books on the subject are rare and dated (Melcher on Acquisitions, 1971, by Daniel Melcher; Stephen Ford's The Acquisition of Library Materials, 1973). To remedy this situation, Wilkinson (associate dean, library services, Univ. of New Mexico) and Lewis (director of collection management and resource acquisitions, UNM) have written a thorough, accurate, up-to-date textbook covering all aspects of acquisitions: the organization of acquisitions departments, acquisitions systems, the publishing industry, vendors, gifts and exchange programs, bindery operations, outsourcing, and the acquisition of books, media, serials, electronic resources, out-of-print, and antiquarian materials. A chapter is devoted to professional ethics, an important but seldom discussed aspect of acquisitions. Within a philosophical framework for acquisitions, the authors focus on the nuts and bolts of daily decisions, such as selecting a vendor. They also address less frequently encountered situations, such as unscrupulous publishers and unsolicited gifts. The appendix offers electronic discussion lists, Internet sites, organizations, and reference books relevant to acquisitions, and more. This is an excellent tool kit for new acquisitions librarians and support staff but also a fine reference for experienced acquisitions professionals. Highly recommended for library schools and for all acquisitions departments.-
