Summary: Good book, know that its typewritten however
Review: I bought this book based on the (presently one) other review, and I'm glad I did. I'm learning Old English on my own, and especially since I already know Latin and German, the grammer and inflexion is easy. The tough part for me is the vocabulary, because I don't want to invest too much time learning it, just enough to get by reading Beowulf and a few other works. This book spells out, with lots of interesting notes, the commonest words typically encountered in beginning study of OE. He takes the 8000 words needed to read Beowulf et al, and given that OE, like German, builds new words out of combining old, shows that 2000 core words are the important ones. Then from this, they can be put into a few hundred groups that are easily studied. So (so = swa, "SO" "AS" etc is the second entry) if you want an aid to help master basic OE vocabulary, this is it. My one complaint is that its copied from typewritten notes from the 70's. Its very well done, for typewritten, but I wish he would rewrite it using TeX, Word or a modern publishing system. It would be easier to read.

Summary: Nice little book
Review: This book is a good book if you already know Old English. It is not alphabetical and difficult to find words. I am positive this will shall be a wonderful book to have around, once one knows Old English in full! But for the moment [for most beginners] it is not wholly ideal.
If you know some [even a fragment], large portions or all of Old English, I recomend it.
I do not mean to sound negative, but I am most duly trying to give my honest thoughts to the best of my ability.

Summary: Not a bad little book.
Review: This book is what it claims to be. A word hoard: a list of words and their meaning. It is a small book, but it is easy to carry around. The better word hoard is the grossly misnamed A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary by John Richard. His book is massive, but burdensome to carry. I like Barney's word hoard, because it is so easy to take to the coffee shop or where ever you do your reading. A light book, but useful. Wyatt Kaldenberg
