Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Finally, a reference book for variationists!
Review: Overall, an excellent book. It outlines much of the work that's been done in variationism over the past 30 years, and provides a good index to help you find what you need. This volume deals specifically with "internal factors"--that is, social factors like sex, age, and social class. Vols. 2 & 3 are to deal with other factors that have an effect on linguistic variation. Assuming the next volumes live up to the standard of vol. 1, once they've all come out it will have been a well spent hundred or so dollars on my part.
