Summary: Yudkin's Book A Must Have
Review: A published freelancer for over a year now, I found Yudkin's book to be the best one that I have read on non-fiction freelance writing. I feel that her advice is timeless and very applicable to the markets out there for the freelance writer today.
The advice she gives is helpful for both the beginner and the more experienced writer, and it is presented in a very clear, specific manner.
If a person could only buy one book on freelancing--this should be it.

Summary: Doesn't Even Begin to Skim the Surface
Review: I bought this book for 25 cents at a used book store without opening the cover. Now I know why it was there.

Yudkin's book doesn't even skim the surface of what freelance writing requires. Market and marketing information is sadly lacking, as well as information on the publishing industry, research tools, and the psychological brick walls encountered by those who embrace this often solitary profession.

On the other hand, I highly recommend that those who wish to thoroughly explore a freelance writing career purchase Michael A. Banks's HOW TO BECOME A FULLTIME FREELANCE WRITER: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SETTING UP A WRITING BUSINESS AT HOME (ISBN is 0-87116-197-4). I found Banks's book easy to understand, thorough, and a delight to read from cover to cover. All of the questions that Yudkin's book ignores, Banks's book covers in great detail.

Contrary to what the title would have you believe, Banks's book is perfect for the experienced writer who is contemplating a jump to fulltime freelancing, as well as for the new writer who would like to explore the idea of taking the first steps toward a freelance career. Spot-on advice abounds for the fiction and non-fiction writer alike in Banks's book. Check out the reviews on Amazon. They speak for themselves!

Summary: A helpful and practical guide
Review: This is one of the most helpful books I've seen on the subject of freelance writing. There's a lot packed into this well-written, easy-to-carry volume. The technique of magazine analysis which Ms Yudkin provides at the very beginning gives readers who follow through on it a real head-start on breaking into print. The author goes on to provide plenty of practical info on the how-to's of freelancing; there are chapters on writing queries, conducting interviews, constructing an article, and lots more, all explained step-by-step. I also liked the several chapters on taking care of the business aspects of writing.

In addition to using examples from her own successful career as a writer to illustrate her points -- she's published in a number of major magazines -- Ms Yudkin includes a section on establishing productive work habits. I can highly recommend this book.
