Review: Kelly James-Enger thoroughly explains how to earn a living as a freelance writer. She begins by explaining the value of specialization, and then shows writers how to use their education and life experience to choose their own specialities. She follows these opening chapters with an insightful chapter that helps demystify the murky realm of queries. The subsequent case study is a practical and highly useful outline for freelancers who require a clear understanding of the steps involved in getting an article published. Finally, the chapters on ten hot markets serve as a useful guide to specialization, pointing out the rewards and challenges associated with each specialty. James-Enger has not only written a lucid and well organized text, but has anticipated a host of questions commonly posed by freelance writers. Summary: Great resource for all freelancers
Review: This book is a detailed guide that shows how to specialise in your writing. We all know that it's impossible to be all things to all people, and nowhere is that truer than in writing.

Freelancer, Kelly James-Enger was an attorney in her previous life (isn't it funny how so many writers have "previous lives?") but has been freelancing since 1997. She writes from experience about the advantages (and financial benefits) of targeting a niche - or three.

Of course, if you're going to write for a niche market, first you have to find your niche and Kelly outlines a great process you can use to find yours. I was fascinated to see how many of my interests slotted into her top 10 hottest markets when I followed her tips! I know you're dying to know what the top 10 markets are ... I'm sure Kelly won't mind me telling you ... They are:

Health, Business & Finance, Parenting, Travel, Essays, Diet, Nutrition & Food, Technology, Fitness & Sports, Profiles and Features, Home and Garden.

These are the topics that are selling and selling very well, so these are the markets you should be directing the bulk of your efforts at reaching. "But I can't write about health," I hear you wail, "I'm not a doctor!"

No, you're a writer. As Kelly points out, you don't need to have a medical degree to write about health, "Nearly every periodical runs some sort of health-related stories ... Parents want to know how to treat and prevent childhood diseases and ensure their kids' well-being. Women read up on gynecological issues ... Baby boomers seek ways to lower their risk of disease and improve the quality of their lives.

"Whether it's a newsy article on the latest developments in AIDS research, a straightforward piece on how to reduce your risk of heart disease, or a rundown of alternative therapies like magnets, aromatherapy, and herbal remedies, health writing is a continually growing and lucrative field."

Kelly has helpfully written a book that covers health, as well as all the other hottest markets. It shows you how to break into each one, what to write about, where to find information, how to approach experts for that all important interview, what associations can help you, and very importantly, the places to pitch your ideas and sell your work. She also suggests ways to tweak your articles and stories to gain maximum mileage from your research.
