Rating: Summary: must-have for students of literature Review: Harner's most recent edition is the "bible" for those studying literature and/or related disciplines. An absolute must-have for graduate students in literature, women's studies, ethnic studies, and other textually-based disciplines.
Rating: Summary: Literary Research Guide: An Annotated Listing of Reference S Review: Useful to librarians, students, and faculty alike, the fourth edition of Harner's masterpiece is essential for libraries supporting humanities research. Scope and organization remain the same as in previous editions, with evaluative annotated entries for reference works on literatures in English (primarily American and British), and related topics such as folklore and literature, medicine and literature, and composition and rhetoric. Divisions include "general literary reference works, national literatures, and topics or sources related to literature." Subdivisions vary, but generally include bibliographies of bibliographies, guides to scholarship, biographical sources, periodicals, and genre sources. Researchers seeking reference works on individual authors will be best served by using Harner jointly with James K. Bracken's Reference Works in British and American Literature (2nd ed., CH, Jan'99). With dozens of new entries and many revised annotations, the 1,217 entries contain references to nearly 1,500 additional sources and 400 reviews. This edition includes URLs for resources available online as well as in print; the citations indicate specific formats. Stand-alone Web sites are not usually included because of their instability. Ongoing revisions are available at . Indispensable and affordable
