Summary: Narratives in Action--theory brilliant, application useful
Review: As someone who's trained in philosophy and psychology, and as a teacher of English, I found this book exciting. The discussion of the way we construct ourselves at least partly through dialogue with others opened new ways of understanding literary characters and narrative points of view. Students in my philosophy class found Wortham's discussion of the nature and study of the self fascinating.The work also helped me observe more carefully and methodically how students develop in classroom and individual discussions. I'm not sophisticated about linguistic theory, but understand that the methodology Wortham lays out is rigorous and useful. For all the complexity and depth of ideas, the book reads well, is clear and interesting.
