Summary: Best Career Guide I have Found!
Review: I absolutely loved this book. I have been searching for a comprehensive book to guide me down the technical writing path, and this is it. A few subject categories include "What is Technical Writing?, "Who Becomes a Technical Writer?," "Choosing a Field (within Technical Writing)," and "A Day in the Life." The book also addresses how to gather information once you are employed to create a good product, how to produce a document, and how to climb the corporate ladder. As a college student trying to choose a career, I would recommend this book to both students and people entering the profession from other fields. This book was written by an authority in the field. Also, it contains valuable appedixes that include professional organization contacts and an extensive and very valuable annotated bibliography. The only downfall of the publication is the relevancy-it was published eight years ago. However, this does not affect most of the information that the book covers. I am hoping that they write a second edition!

Summary: Good Book, but in Need of a Major Update
Review: This was the first book I read on technical writing in '95 or so, and, at the time, it was a good resource (and still is, in some ways).

However, it's been eight years and a lot of things have changed in the 'tech writing game:' online help, the web, computers, tools (word processors, graphics programs, etc.), so it is well past time for an update.

If your library has a copy, go ahead and check it out ... but if you're looking for more up-to-date information, look elsewhere. "Making Money in Technical Writing" is good, as is "Write Your Way to Riches: How to Make a Fortune as a Technical Writer."
