Rating: Summary: This book is incredibly useful! Review: Russian in Excersises is by far one of the best little books I've ever seen, but the consumer should be aware of a few things before buying this out of print gem. First, it is not one smidgen more than a book of "Russian in Excersizes." Exactly as advertized in the title, there are many, numerous, extensive excersises, and only excersises present in it's pages. You will not find any explanations of grammar whatsoever! But this book is so good that if you're a student of Russian at any level except beginner, the format is such that it practically explains the grammar just by the examples they use. In it's favor: There are simply oodles of excersizes! In the first section for example, we find plurals of nouns. They give you 10 sentences to solve (pluralize). Then they have you do it backwards (singularize). Then forwards with two per sentence. The book contains 800 different excersises, plus the answers are all neatly arranged in the back for quick and easy reference. Just chanting and solving your way through any group of excersizes on any grammatical case will make you a fast expert. The format of the topical sections and excersises are compact and crisp. No frills, no color, just tons of excersizes. Not in it's favor: I didn't give it the fifth star only because sometimes the examples they provide you with (which are supposed to explain what your task is for a particular excersize you want to work on) are not crystal clear. Also, since it is out of print, some frills that are actually useful for learning (that you may be used to) aren't present since it was printed quite some time ago. But all in all I sincerely recomend it to anyone who wants a compact easy to carry around book that has zillions of examples and drills for every essential grammatical case. A must have for the student who likes to drill.
