Write for College: A Students Handbook

Summary: Is everything better than nothing?
Review: As a teacher who has had to use this book for the past 2 years, I would be rather sorry to part with it--from my personal library. After all, it contains an almanac, a six-year calendar, the U. S. Constitution along with all sorts of pointers about how to succeed in college and life. Moreover, for teachers unexperienced in teaching composition, the text breaks down the writing process in both a short, simplified sequence and an extended, more detailed one. And lengthy chapters are devoted to writing every kind of discourse--from literary essays to science reports to business letters and essay exams. When I discovered that most of my students who had purchased the book for a previous course never used it, I tried mightily to incorporate it into my classes, and there was the rub. The lengthy and repetitious sections on the writing process are unwieldy and no substitute for doing it, and the "handbook" section is minimal and of limited practical value. In fact, there's no convenient way for student writers to connect correction symbols with related discussions in the text. A student writer would not find out how to punctuate a compound sentence containing a conjunctive adverb, but he would discover that success in college requires "determination, curiosity, and self-reliance" (p. 544). Perhaps it's just as well that the parental, if not preachy, tone of much of the text assures students will not make use of it: The authors caution students against change, reminding them it's smart "to stick to your values and beliefs" (547). As an educator, I would have to disqualify the book from serious consideration on the basis of that sentence alone.

Summary: This book has it all!
Review: Every college student should have a copy of "Write For College." It contains information on so many things, for instance, the writing process, revising, proofreading, sentence structure, grammer, writing a college essay, resumes, reports, analytical writing, literary analysis, MLA and APA documentation style, note taking, test taking, building a vocabulary, speech giving, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, weights and measures, the periodic table of the elements, world maps, and the U.S. Constitution. There is even a section that has tips on how to deal with test anxiety! It is well worth EVERY penny. This is an indispensable resource.

Review: I admit that I have not read the book all the way through yet, but I already know by scanning it that the money I paid for it was well beyond worth it! It is a great help for those of us who do not get the information needed to us by our teachers to learn how to write period. There is so much that writing influences that you can not get around haveing to have good writing skills. The authors of this book are a God send to me!! I wish I could thank them for caring enough about good literature to make it available to everyone!!! I noticed that it is an atractive book and the authors did not waste any space or paper writing it. The index is easy to use, the texture of the paper is of great quality, and I think that the age range of this book is from a freshman in highschool to a highschool teacher. It is very nicely written. Oh, by the way, my teacher recommended this book to our class at C.A.R.T.(CENTER FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH & TECHNOLOGY) Well done!

My students have found this book helpful, and many have purchased their own copy for college use. My best results have been with the advanced level students, although all writing levels have benefitted from it. Read and re-read it again. Enjoy!

Review: I'm returning to college after 15 years of being in the "real world" and this book is great. I have a lot of natural writing ability and overall, I'm comfortable with the writing process. But it has been awhile since I've had to sit down and write a college position/research paper and I don't recall ever being required to use the MLA document style before! It's great to be able to pick and choose through the sections of this book as I need them!
