Rating: Summary: This book will be very useful and I know it! Review: I just bought this book the other day and it is amazing. It gives you the facts you need for survival. If I get caught in a situation from the book and I don't know what to do, I will be suprized.
Rating: Summary: This book will be very useful and I know it! Review: I've had this book for a few years now and have read it over and over again. The information is amazing. There's not a topic that Wiseman doesn't cover or at least touch on. Not only is it small, it's tough too. It's been on every camping trip, hike, deployment and just about every other trip with me for the past three years and it's still in great shape. Friends of mine that could have cared less about a suvival book have read mine on airplane rides and afterwards went and bought thier own. You can't go wrong
Rating: Summary: Not enough material for me Review: It may be impossible to write a survival book that is accurate and authoritative on all environments and all areas of the world, and this is something to keep in mind when purchasing a general survival book, especially a condensed one like the Gem Survival Guide. For the most part, it's quite good and gives excellent information on outdoors survival in most temperate climates. HOWEVER, one place the book does fall down is in areas like jungle and desert survival. There is little specialized information for those environments, ESPECIALLY important topics like navigation, first aid, water collection, and animal/plant information, and what there is can be dangerously vague. For those interested in jungle or desert survival I would definitely recommend other specialized books like Adventure Travel in the Third World by Jeff Randall or The Ultimate Desert Handbook by Mark Johnson, which do a much, much better job at covering those areas.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book!! Review: One of my friends bought the big version that had a little more information in it. I read it and when I saw that you could buy a pocket version I was thrilled! Wisemen gives an informative description of everything you need to survive almost anywhere. I'm confident that if I were in a survival situation I would be able to survive.
Rating: Summary: Worth it's weight in gold Review: Outstanding in price, size, and content. Few books have been more useful to me, or resourceful. Really it covers every possible situation, and because of the afore mentioned size, it can go just about everywhere with you. Campers, survivalists, anti-governmental extremists, wanna be hunters and gatherers will all find this little baby an amazing repository of highly useful and to the point information. This thing even covers emergency childbirth for crying out loud! How can you go wrong? So while other suckers are starving to death, dying of thirst, or being eaten by sharks, you'll be relaxing and thinking about what you're going to do when you get home. Brilliant.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: Such a little book and so much information! No matter how sedate a life you lead you will find some knowledge in this book that will come in handy. Everyone should have a copy.
Rating: Summary: Collins Gem SAS Survival Guide Review: Such a little book and so much information! No matter how sedate a life you lead you will find some knowledge in this book that will come in handy. Everyone should have a copy.
Rating: Summary: The Best Survival Guide For a Person who Enjoys the woods! Review: The SAS survival guide, is, one of the best survival guides I have ever read in my life. As a Boy Scout, I should know. It packs loads of information into a small, compact book. I would recommend it for anyone who likes the outdoors and wants to learn more about nature.
Rating: Summary: A backpack basic. Review: This is the finest source of knowledge in the smallest package i have found to date. It covers a large variety of situations, and it gives it to you in easy to understand terminology. I read the book just for the pleasure of it. I own this small version and the full size version. I recommend buying them both. Worth every shiny cent. Thanks much
Rating: Summary: Not for the casual Review: With store shelves overloaded by "SAS" books it's unfortunate that this little, uh, Gem can be lost in that crowd. The original format was more like a coffee table book, but for practical purposes this chunky, compact edition is not only the most convenient of those available, it is also arguably the best on the market. The manual itself is comprehensive, clearly written and with clear (if sometimes limited) illustrations, including a useful colour section; and here the colour is used for more than mere decoration as it provides essential additional information in identifying plants and animals. There is no philosophical description here, little room for the romance of the wild or the ethics of surviving. Instead, "Lofty" Wiseman's guide is a direct parcel of solid information aimed solely at keeping you alive in the worst of situations. Campers and outdoorsmen will find some interesting and useful sections here, but it requires a degree of knowledge and experience to sift them from those which simply must not be used outside of an emergency. This is a fascinating book to dip into, and doubtless most purchasers treat it as such, but it is also an exceptionally effective, reliable and well-crafted source of possibly vital information.
