Summary: good book if you're motivated.
Review: after i learned quite a bit, i realized it was punjabi i really wanted to learn... but this book is still really good. i just wish they would have kept translating the dialogue throughout the book, not just at the beginning. i guess they assume you'll actually go in order, chapter by chapter, like you're supposed to :)

Summary: A very helpful book
Review: I have been in the market for two years searching for just the right book. I have found it. It's professional produced and also incorporates the cultural aspects of the language as well. My only discontent with the book is you have to learn the written script as well in order to follow along after Chapter 5. I didn't learn to read and write English that way. Be forewarned if you just want to learn to speak Urdu.

Summary: The best book available to teach yourself Urdu !
Review: Thanks to both Mr Matthews and Mr Dalvi, learning Urdu has become accessible at last ! You will not find a better book. I am learning Urdu right now with the assistance of a Pakistani student and althought it is not so easy, this book takes the trouble to make everything so clear and simple.

Summary: Good start
Review: This is a good introduction to Urdu. It provides a good overview of spoken Urdu and a more thorough study of written urdu. I wish there was more diction and focus on speaking

Summary: mujhe bahut pasand hai!
Review: This is a great book for students who want a solid base in both written and spoken Urdu. My main interest at the moment is in Urdu sufi literature and this course really gives a great start (although its focus is mostly on more useful, everyday language it's not hard to jump to more complicated texts once you have a sufficient base). The "Teach Yourself" series is generally good and targets the most useful and relevant parts of the language to teach. This book is another great example.Mujhe bahut pasand hai!

Summary: Good for just a little more than beginners
Review: This is a very good book for those who are just a little more than beginners. Although, with good concentration even a beginner can start with this book. I really needed to tie up loose ends on my Urdu grammatically and needed practice lessons. I wanted this book more for learning to read Urdu rather than learning to speak Urdu. Once you realize that word is the word you've been hearing or speaking then the light bulb comes on and you then recognize it after a little practice. My husband is Pakistani and when I was in Pakistan I learned a lot of Urdu but it really takes time and practice practice practice..even if they laugh at you..they do it with love :D Don't feel shy or embarrassed because remember this is not your first language...and in many cases not even your second :D Good Luck!
