Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book with great advice! Review: All how-to books have a cheesey element to them...and while this is no exception, the information is up to date, useful and easy to access. What's really great about this book is that you can use it as you need to-- no need to read it in one sitting, just wait until you're in a bind and then read whatever section is pertinent. It's well done, comprehensive, and fun. The perfect gift for a senior in high school or college student.
Rating: Summary: Not a bad book Review: As college survival books go, this one ain't half bad. The information is solid, as is the advice. The only flaw it really has is that you don't get a complete picture of the college experience. There is no "personal" slant or definitive point-of-view. I recommend purchasing the following two books in addition to Arco as part of a 3 book set for your soon-to-be college freshman: Confessions of a College Freshman: A Survival Guide for Dorm Life, Biology Lab, the Cafeteria, and Other First-Year Adventures (ISBN: 1589196600) This is a good solid first person account of the college experience, and a decent read. College 101 : The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read (ISBN: 0966412206) The section on computing is dated, but the advice in this book definitely hits home. Guy Stevens holds no punches and has irritated numerous college admission officers. The Arco book, and the two books listed above will prepare any college freshman for the best, and the worst!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book with great advice! Review: I am a residence life advisor at University of Texas and for years I've been recommending this book to incoming freshman, especially those with a lot of questions and concerns about college life. Students can relate to it because it was written by a team of students. Thank you Greg Gottesman for revising it again. There is another book that I wish every parent would buy for their children going to college, and that's Major In Success by Patrick Combs. I recommend getting College Survival to help your son or daughter make the adjustment, and Major in Success to help them standout.
Rating: Summary: Lots of great advice Review: the main problem I had with other "college survival books" were that they all induced the "DUH" response from me. don't let your grades drop. use effective study techniques. there may be tensions between you and your roommate. DUH. this kind of information is common sense, the things I knew and anticipated in the first place. this book packs a lot of advice and insights that I could actually USE.. a lot of the pages had me going "ooh, so THAT's what it is." or "hey, I always wanted to know that." as a freshman-to-be, i found htis book tremendously helpful and reassuring. I don't know if my opinion of this book will change after I actually experience my first year, but as of now I feel a lot safer, more confident and ready for next year. and that's exactly what I needed from a book like this.
Rating: Summary: A so so book. I wish I can give it 3.5 stars. Review: This book covers most of the basics of college life. No surprises. No big discoveries. However, chapters 12 (Computers at College)and 13 (The Internet) are outdated. These things are so basic to a typical high school students at this day and age that these two chapters are either unnecessary or very inadequate. Chapters 6 through 11 are pretty good.
