Rating: Summary: Very Easy and Very Interesting Review: I am teaching an 18 year old student who immigrated from Ukraine about 4 months ago. I bought this book, sight unseen, from Amazon and I have had the most tremendous success with it. The young man laughs out-loud at times while retelling the stories, and he shares them with his father who is said to enjoy them as well. Since many of the stories were in the news, I have been able to embellish them. I am finding out what interests my student as he reacts to each story, and questions and answers are exchanged naturally between the two of us. I plan to try using this book and the sequels with deaf students who have not achieved literacy commensurate with their aptitude. The high interest of these books should be a tremendous motivator to help them reach their potential. I hope Sandra Heyer will consider publishing more volumes at the "very easy" level in the future!
Rating: Summary: Fun first reader Review: The cover says it all -- very easy stories with pictures. This is a fun book for very low ESL students -- especially in a class with mixed languages where translation is awkward at best. Heyer provides drawings that do all the translation for the students, making the stories immediately comprehendable to beginning students with limited English and reading skills. The stories are simple but humorous, or curious, and very appealing to adult learners.
