Rating: Summary: Piece of Cake Review: A friend gave me the book saying she used it to score a "B" on the exam. I had never taken Sociology before but after studying this book for about 3 weeks, I also scored a "B" on the CLEP. This is the only book I used and I now have 3 more credits. Excellent resource! CLEP tests are also free for military and reserve members so go for it, you have nothing to loose.
Rating: Summary: I Passed Review: After being out of college for 20 years, taking an anonymous exam for credit was one of the first things I dared do in my foray to return to my studies. I bought this book, read it, took notes to myself...and with just some supplementary reading from one other sociology book I randomly picked up (they're all pretty similar), I passed with the equivalent of an "A". There were a good handful of questions on the test not covered in the book, but most of those were based on common sense and how to read a simple graph or chart. Some I just guessed at! The CLEP exams allow you a lot of room to make mistakes and you can still pass. This book was a certain element of my success. I even learned a lot! GO FOR IT. .
Rating: Summary: Passed with flying colors and then some Review: Bought this sociology clep book and read it thoroughly and made my own notes, took the 3 practice tests and reviewed the results.
I also purchased the text by Richard Schaffer and reviewed the chapters which was very useful. Aced the test with a 74.
Make a list of the theorists and what they proposed. I took the exam with confidence and 20 mins to spare.
The text book helped me on some questions that are not in the Clep book. Schaffer has some real good definitions, charts and chapter highlights at the end of each chapter, it is awesome.
After you study these two books, you can teach the class !!
Rating: Summary: Great book for CLEP exam Review: I bought this book because of all the positive reviews from readers who had used it to successfully pass the CLEP exam. I study this book for about a month. It was like reading toast, it was that dry. This afternoon I took my CLEP exam for Sociology and passed. I didn't use any other book or extra material. Overall the material was presented well and the order of topics/subjects was good. I was very pleased with my investment in this book.
Rating: Summary: All you need Review: I have never taken a sociology course in my life. I bought this book, read it, took the three practice tests, read the detailed answers, took the CLEP test, and passed with room to spare. This is the cheapest three college credits I've ever earned.
Rating: Summary: Very Good But Not Great - Although I passed Review: I rated the book not the test - the test is easy/simple. I passed with just reading this book - although I bought a review sheet (you know those sheets you can get at borders that just outlines everything) I reviewed for the clep for about 4 weeks - but I really didn't start to study for it until week before the test. I also work full time, I am husband and father, and go to school part-time on top of this. I passed with a 54 - to - 50. Which means barely. There are some, if not a middlepassage, of questions that the clep does not answer and you do have to have a basic understanding of sociology to pass. Well thats what the clep is for, and I think the test has changed some what. But the subject itself is very easy - just alot of names and definitions - other than that its nothing! Really!! Anyone can pass this test if they know those things! Good luck!
Rating: Summary: One week of studying and scored a 67 Review: I started studying this Monday and passed my test today(Friday). This book does a great job of covering the contents of the test. What the book breezes over, the 3 test pick up the slack. Each practice test has 100 questions. Braking the test into 4 by 25 will allow you to track your progress and retain more information. Some of the Practice questions were on the official test(some word for word, some very close). As long as you don't cram, you wil probably earn a better score. Study the Theory and the Theorist. Take your time and good luck!
Rating: Summary: all you need. Review: I used this book alone to study for the clep and passed with a 70. would have done better but I missed some questions I knew the answers to, but just didn't think about. wish REA had study guides for ALL the cleps.
Rating: Summary: Computer-based Sociology CLEP Test Review: I was concerned when I bought this book that the material would not be current enough to pass the new computer-based version of the test. In short...it is. I work in the IT industry and have never taken a Sociology course in my life. I bought this book, read it from front-to-back, went over the sample tests and explanations twice, and took the test. I spent three days covering the material and passed with 16 points to spare. This is the only book that I used to prepare for the test. For anyone who is contemplating whether to take this test or the class, just take the test. Good luck!
Rating: Summary: Only used this book and I passed. Review: I'm going to be totally honest. I bought this book about three weeks ago, and schedualed my test for Nov. 14, 2003. I put off studying till the day of the test. The test was at 1:00pm, and I started studying for the exam at 5:00am that morning. I read half of the sociology review and then started on the practice exam. First time taking the practice exam, I bombed it. Then I started to read all the explination questions for each answer, and then proceeded to take the second practice exam. This time I did much better, with about 60% right, then I proceeded to read all the explaination answers in the back, and proceeded to do practice test three. I did awesome that time, only missing a few questions. I noticed all the questions from prep test to prep test are perrty much the same but worded differently. I had about one hour left before the exam after I finished studying, and then headed to the test center eating a box of raisens. I arrived with 20 minutes to spare, didn't think or look at the book during that time. Went into the exam room, had 90 minutes to do the test, I finished it in 40 minutes with a 62 when I only needed a 50 to pass. I'll be honest I probably won't retain much from all of this, but I passed. Awesome book, everything that was on the test was covered in the practice test in the book. Its a must have for all you night before the test crammers :)
