Summary: A Classic for all time
Review: I obtained my 2 volumes at a church bookstore in 1969. Some recipes are not found elsewhere. I was raised on wild game and was thrilled to find "how to" instructions. Even though I had been trained in the "art" of preparing wild game as a child there were some things I had forgotten. This is a trusted cookbook and I have not yet found a recipe that has not "worked" as has happened with other cookbooks. There are no recipes with an X through them like my other cookbooks.

Most recently I made Key Lime Pies and received rave reviews. This cookbook has it all. If you only buy one cookbook in your life, spend your money on this one if you can find it.

Summary: The Best Gift Ever Received
Review: I received this two volume set as a free gift for buying a set of encyclopedias. It was in 1966 and my husband and I had just arrived in Massachusettes. He was in the military and we had one son. I didn't know how to boil an egg. This book taught me everything I know about cooking and saved my families life. It is not only a cookbook, it is an educational tool that is better than any cooking school. It not only has recipes for cooking everything imaginally but it also teaches you the basics about baking, buying meat, vegetables, setting a table and it includes complete menues. My copy is so worn that I have taped it together many times. It has moved with me from east coast to west coast and over seas. To this day, whenever I prepare special meals, I still use this book. I can't believe that a book this valuable is no longer being printed.

Summary: This book is my life
Review: I recieved a used copy of this book when I was first married. My family ate and grew from those recipies. My book has many pages falling out of it and I still use it as a preacher uses his bible. The book was first published two years before I was born. This is truly what is called home cooking. Lucy

Summary: Where's The Rest Of It??
Review: I was so excited to get my volume, and immediately tried to look up my favorite bread pudding recipe (as remembered in my old falling-apart copy.) The index says it's on page 536, so imagine my surprise when I find that the first page in my new book is 738. My old book is all one volume, so I had no way of knowing that I was only ordering half a book. If anyone is interested in ordering this book, beware! Make sure that you are getting it all, either in one volume or that the two you order are Volume 1 and Volume 2. I was very, very disappointed, to say the least.

Summary: Meta Givens Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking
Review: Like the reviewer from Gulf Shores, Ala.., I couldn't even boil water when I married. I purchased this cook book in about 1952 and learned how to cook from it. It was my cooking bible. My copy has been through too many moves to count, the hard cover is gone and some of the pages from the front and back. But it is still used. The pumpkin pie recipe that calls for orange juice is a family favorite. We don't wait for holidays to make it. I used this book to teach my children the proper way to set a table. I'v used the menues. I used it to find out how to dress out ducks that my husband brought home from hunting. I like the way the recipes are grouped together in sections. If you want to bake cookies, all recipes are together. I learned all of the mysteries of cooking terms. We subsitute healthier choices for some of the ingredients. For a new comer to cooking or shopping for food, the hints on what to look for are invaluable. Not everyone takes Home Ec in school or is even interested in it, anymore. Meta Givens taught Home Ec. at the Univercity of Chicago. With more people wanting to buy healthy, it is wonderful. Not everyone wants " frozen" home cooked food. I have four grown children who are squabbling over who get's it when I die! I have tried to find at least one more copy of this cook book. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the publisher would re-print this cook book!

Summary: The Most Complete Cookbook You'll Ever See
Review: My mother, a wonderful cook, gave me this cookbook in 1959 as a bride to be. I've probably purchased 500 cookbooks since then, and this is the one I constantly return to. Full of delicious and healthy recipes, arranged in a simple to find manner, it also offers kitchen tips, ingredient substitutes, conversions, and ideas for serving. A gentle reminder of a time when manners and grace were expected, it teaches us how to prepare and serve everything from casual family meals to elaborate parties. My original copies are literally falling apart, but fortunately, I was able to find used replacements through a local bookstore's search. They found it at Amazon.com! It was years ahead of its time. My favorite section was and is the section on quick meals for working women. The full menu is presented, and each recipe follows. Each meal takes about 30-45 minutes from beginning to serving. I cannot understand why it is out of print. I'm glad that Amazon.com can get it used. My highest recommendation seems inadequate!
