Rating: Summary: May be the best out there, but it's not the best it can be.. Review: I was disappointed right away that not even the most basic colors are included. Found only blue and red...no green, yellow, purple. Look forward to using it as much as possible, but it needs some more expanding.

Rating: Summary: Waste of money Review: I was required to purchase this book for ASL1. The signs in the book did not match the signs I was taught in class. Both my ASL 1 and 2 teachers told me not to bother with the book. Unless you are going to be an interpreter, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! If you are going to be an interpreter, look for a better book. A much more user friendly book is, "The American sign language phrase book" by Lou Fant. ISBN 0809235005
Rating: Summary: dumb Review: Sternberg provides an excellent arrangment of signs, definitions and graphics which makes comprehension simple. With the companion CD ROM, American Sign Language
Dictionary provides a history of each sign, what the historical visual image represents
and how that representation is used in contemporary communication. Now that I
understand that "autumn" is represented by the sign for chopping down a tree (i.e.
"harvest"), I don't forget what I've learned. The CD ROM provides a basic understanding
of the grammar that the book cannot because of the visual interaction the CD shows with
motion that the book cannot. The book and CD, together, create a simple-to-understand
language course which becomes an excellent foundation to learning the language.
Following the six months of occassional study the book and CD have given me, my
entrace into a beginning course at the local community college is considerably easier.
My vocabulary and usage is greater and grammatically more accuarate. Neither the book
nor the CD will teach you the whole language. But they will give you an exposure in
easy-to-understand terms to what deaf people see in communication. I strongly
recommend the use of the book AND CD ROM as your entrance into learing the
wonderfully colorful language of quiet communication. Together, it becomes the best
coordinated set of teaching materials I've seen on this subject in years of searching.

Rating: Summary: Could be cleaner Review: This book had good descriptions of how to sign, it also had many signs that I don't want to know. When am I ever going to want to sign 'Marijuana?'
Rating: Summary: Good for beginners Review: This book is the greatest sign language book I have seen. I love the way it has the old sign to the new one this book is a must for anyone who knows or wants to learn sign language!!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: This book is truly the best sign language book I have ever come in counter with. It has more words than all my other dictionaries and it has complete, easy to understand illustrations.
Rating: Summary: Could be cleaner Review: This is an excellent reference book for learning American Sign Language in a classroom or elsewhere. The descriptions of the signs are complete, and include an explanation of the sign's origin, making it easier to remember. I found the number of words to be absolutely sufficient for my purposes, which are elementary-to-intermediate study at NYU.
