Rating: Summary: It would have been better without so many errors! Review: The cassette was great - essential for me in trying to figure out how to pronounce Dutch. But the book was very frustrating - there were many errors which I found myself, and my Dutch friend found even more when he took a look at it for me. Overall I found the book and cassette very helpful, but when you're trying to learn a language, errors in the textbook from which you are learning are the last thing you want to see!
Rating: Summary: The Basics & Then Some Review: This book is overall written quite well- with a good layout and extra information on Dutch Culture- however, this book is full of vocabulary, spelling & grammatical errors (in both Dutch AND English). It is a good beginner book but you should have a native speaker around to make sure that what you are learning is accurate!

Rating: Summary: The best way to teach yourself Dutch Review: This is book is amazing! In 18 very well organized lessons, the book covers every aspect of the colloquial dutch grammar. Telling the story of a british family moving to the Netherlands, the author cover many daily situations with dialogues that grows in complexity throughout the book. With the cassetes you can easily master the dutch pronunciation and in three months you'll be able to communicate in dutch.
Rating: Summary: a fine, fine book, but... Review: You have to have some context in which to use what you learn. I took this book, without the tapes, to Holland on a year abroad and found it indispensable. The lessons and exercises are very clear, though not so clear that you don't have to do any thinking for yourself. I imagine the book is of limited use to someone who does not have the opportunity to put what s/he learns into practice on a daily basis. If you're in Holland and are looking for something more advanced, I highly recommend going to any academic bookstore and purchasing the _Lezen, Las, Gelezen_ series.
