Rating: Summary: even a caucasian could learn Review: i am the typical midwest anglo saxon and having a hmong girlfriend led me to learn this language. But i wanted it to be a suprise.....so i bought this book and studied it in private- and even though the language is so much different then english....this book carried me through it all step by step--relating the sounds of hmong to english words i knew- so that i could pronounce them readily.(without a hmong person's help) I have bought numerous books in the past regarding this subject- and this one was the breakthrough.......you will be greatly enabled with this tool!
Rating: Summary: Not appropriate for Hmong ESL students Review: I work at a school for Hmong refugees and we were hoping the dictionary portion of this book could be used by our students. According to our bilingual specialist, who is Hmong and has a BA from an American university, this dictionary has many errors. Two of our other Hmong staff members also found errors. In addition, they all said that the dictionary's definitions would be too confusing for most Hmong ESL students. Perhaps the instructional part of the book could help caucasian Americans to learn Hmong, but be aware that, according to our native-speaking Hmong staff members, the pronunciation indicators in this book are not all accurate, and the grammatical explanations try to impose English grammar on a language which is practically the polar opposite of English. The result is an inaccurate picture of the language.
