Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Still useful after all these years.
Review: As a graduate student in Latin, I have nothing but praise for Cassell's dictionary. The entries are concise and helpful, and it has sections for both English to Latin and Latin to English, which makes it ideal for introductory-level courses that require student composition.

As for the reviewer who complained that it does not contain "longa" or "lata," the individual is quite mistaken and displaying his ignorance; Latin adjectives are listed under the masculines, thus "longus-a-um" is present, as is "latus-a-um."

An inexpensive and effective tool that's valuable as a quick aid for nearly all levels of Latin.

Summary: Good for the basics
Review: For a serious Latin student or scholar, this is virtually useless, but the price and size make it a nice second dictionary to tote around in a backpack between classes, or good for a beginner. Is the print quality poor? Yes. Will it fall apart in time? Yes. But for the price, I could lose it and not care. If you plan to be a Latin major or do advanced readings, however, the Lewis and Short or the Oxford Latin Dictionary are far more comprehensive, and correspondingly far more expensive.

Summary: Elementary, not advanced
Review: For more years than I care to count, I have used Cassell's Latin/English, English/Latin Dictionary, published by Funk & Wagnall's, New York. I looked on the verso of the title page for the publication date, but found only the notation "339th thousand"--- no date anywhere in sight. I do know I bought it (used) in 1953, so, although a "Revised Edition," it's certainly not what one would call "new." When I saw that a new edition had made its way into print, I immediately ordered it. Verdict? It's dreadful. Many, many significant words omitted, definitions askew, tenses turned on their heads. I am remiss in giving it a one star rating, yet your directions say I must fill in that field. This dictionary is VERY VERY disappointing.

Summary: Good Dictionary
Review: I am a Latin student at a college preparatory school. When I asked my teacher, an Oxford scholar, which dictionary he recommended, he unhesitatingly showed me this one. I have found it very complete and informative and it has served my purposes well.

Summary: Limited
Review: I bought this dictionary along with the Bantam Latin-English, Engish-Latin dictionary. Of the two, I found that the Bantam dictionary was the better. There have been a few times when I've tried looking up a word in the Cassell's dictionary and not found it, only to find it in the Bantam dictionary. If you're going to purchase a Cassell's Latin dictionary then the hardcover edition is the better buy. Otherwise I would recommend getting the Bantam dictionary.

Summary: Elementary, not advanced
Review: I have used this dictionary for several years as a high school Latin student and it worked well enough as long as I didn't need to be very precise. Now working more in-depth as a classics major and reading Vergil in particular, I have become very disillusioned with it and am planning on purchasing a new one. It works for elementary Latin, but leaves out too much for advanced work. The printing quality is also poor.

Summary: Poor quality of paper and print plus disappointing content
Review: I ordered this book for my father as he had asked me to get him a simple yet comprehensive text (he speaks fluent Latin as it was a prerequisite for medical studies in his day). He was extremely disappointed with what he considers to be very poor quality of paper and print used, and found the dictionary content similarly disappointing. Which just proves the point that it is always a complete nightmare shopping for anything for one's Dad, as it never seems to hit the spot, even on Amazon.com!

Summary: Not worth the money
Review: My latin teacher in college suggested that we buy this book. I think it was a good choice. It goes from both Latin to English and English to Latin, so either way you are set with this book. I wouldn't say that it was a thrill ride but it served the purpose nicely. Plus it isn't too expensive and you can use it for a while. Latin is fun and this dictionary helps you to understand it.
