Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Gems
Review: I highly recommend both these books. I bought and read them the minute they became available. I immediately pressed them into service in my work as a reading specialist, and middle/high school literacy coach for a large urban school district.

What makes this set so useful is the compatibility of the books. Each makes the other immediately doable.

Having read and used the Reading for Understanding book and having carefully researched RFU's list of reading selections for their stand-alone academic literacy course, I was delighted this new anthology included many of those actual excerpts as well as additional well chosen excerpts. (I work hard to collect short non-fiction texts that have richness, depth and visceral connections to adolescents' identity and literacy and power. Now I can use the anthology's selections immediately, and use them as exemplars to guide my future searches.)

I am also using the Lessons from Reading Apprenticeship Classrooms book to inform my creation of units of study and curriculum maps. Either book alone is a gem, but together they get 6 stars!!
